Re: [HOW TO] Gain Permanent Root on CL14 Out-The-Box and Backup/Restore Customization

I just found an XP home, and installed it in virtualbox the phone was recognized but the drivers installed wouldn't allow me to access the phone's SD card.

So I got the drivers from Sticky: Find Your Samsung Moment Drivers Here which allows me access to the phone's SD card and it's directories.

The Zefie kernel file is difficult to download, meaning what file should be downloaded? a lot of files there I scrolled through all of them ending up with these two.

sph-m900_ze14.3_kern_spr.tar.7z
ze14.3_update.zip

So do both need to be installed? This guide talks about .7z but doesn't mention what the update.zip is or how to install it.

These instruction are a bit confusing.
Rooting
1. Make sure your phone is not connected to your computer
2. Install Sprint Utility using default settings
3. Uncompress downloaded kernel using 7-Zip (if compressed)
4. Browse to C:\PROGRAM FILES\SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS\SWUPGRADE\MODELS\BINARY and backup exiting file, remove file after backing up
5. Making sure the BINARY folder is empty, copy kernel to the BINARY foler
7. Run SWUPDATE.EXE and follow the prompts, when successful you phone will reboot
8. Check build MENU>SETTINGS>ABOUT PHONE>BUILD NUMBER if it reads CUSTOM KERNEL VERSION you've rooted your phone

I have read 1 through 8 several times no where does it say to connect your phone to the pc.

I am guessing number 6 but number 6 doesn't exist, I am not nit picking I just want to make 100% percent sure I follow correct and accurate directions.

Number 1 says make sure your phone is not connected to pc, at what number should the phone be connect?

Ah, I'm guessing you got a mark on your report card 'unable to follow instructions' :)
here's where you plug your phone back in
7. Run SWUPDATE.EXE and follow the prompts, when successful you phone will reboot

When you run the Sprint Utility you accept the terms, go to the next step and it says make sure you have a fully charged batter, click next and then it tells you to pull out and put your battery back in, next step go into download mode and then plug your phone to the computer via USB

Thanks for the help,=D>=D> I write tutorials for Linux and help out on Linux forums as well as other forums, urban terror, dslreports, and such. If I miss a step I am asked about it,:mrgreen: which shows me the person first of all read the tutorial eg instructions in the first place.

Re: [HOW TO] Gain Permanent Root on CL14 Out-The-Box and Backup/Restore Customization

Ok got somthing weird happening.
I get down to 5% battery and plug the phone in it instantly jumps tp 25%, then a few seconds later jumps to 45%. Also happens at 45% tested, and when plugged in it jump immediatly to 70%.
Is there a file on the list mentioned that affects battery readings by chance? To jump that fast to that high is impossible. So that leads me to 2 things:
1: root is affecting it somehow
2: somthing on the remove list has to do with readin the battery correctly.
I have a samsung moment useing joey's kernel (latest)
This also happens with 3 different battery apps, each one acts exactly the same.

Re: [HOW TO] Gain Permanent Root on CL14 Out-The-Box and Backup/Restore Customization

As for myself I only use the battery app that comes with moment, I just removed a few apps, only the ones that I simply had no use for.

amazonmp3_1.4+4_standard_signed.apk
Bejeweled.apk
SprintTV.apk
SprintTVWidget.apk
nascar09_prod.apk

Haven't noticed any side effects, to be honest all I can see is that su "root" has been installed in the update. I am of course new to moment, and rooted mainly to remove apps.

did you by any chance reboot while in rw "read write"?

Re: [HOW TO] Gain Permanent Root on CL14 Out-The-Box and Backup/Restore Customization

I did in fact a couple of time. When I reboot though it's back to r/o.
I deleted everything on the list mentioned earlier and havn't had any adverse effects except for the battery issue. It would take probably weeks to find out though, delteing one thing then letting the phone run down and such.

Hi all. Just got the Moment yesterday after hanging onto a plain ol flip phone for years.

Just wanted to say thanks for this tutorial. Went as easy as 1-2-3. Appreciate the write up!

Re: [HOW TO] Gain Permanent Root on CL14 Out-The-Box and Backup/Restore Customization

I've done a few of zefie's previous updates via ODIN and this is the first time using the updater. I updated to speedrabbit's just fine, but when I try to enter recovery mode it hangs about 2/3 of it's way through loading. So I figured I'd try Zefie's. The recovery goes through the loading phase and just hangs. So I download the recovery tar and update and I get the Samsung screen and nothing loads, the bar is at zero.

Not sure what to do at the moment (no pun intended). Anyone? Was hoping to get the custom ROM on tonight and be done with it, but I guess that's not happening now.

Go back to CL14 and start over, I had to do this with Caulkulin's custom ROM... I tried doing a restore on a tweak and my phone had the same symptoms as you. I started all over again with Sprint's official CL14 update and then I was good to go

Had a feeling. When in doubt, start from scratch. So any preference between zefie and speedrabbit?
