What is the icon to the left of the 4G… .looks like an eye… .

That is the smart stay icon. The display will remain on as long as you are looking at the screen.

Thanks. Is there a way to set this thing so that all the tones it makes follow the level of the main volume control??

Go in to settings, sound and set the sliders all the same.
