6.5 Start Menu Icons > White Background?

ok this is driving me batty. sometimes certain start menu icons have a white background and sometimes they don't. i can't figure out what's causing this let alone how to resolve it.
here's a couple pictures. notice the palringo icon...
(and palringo isn't the only one that does it)
both screenshots are using the same theme and everything

any ideas?

The icon's themselves may have a a transparent background...try modifying the icon and see if you can change the bg color.
