Transparency In Photoshop CS

I am in need of assistance. I am using Photoshop CS3 and am fairly new with that program. I am wanting to make some transparent icons, backgrounds, etc but am not quite sure how to do it. I made a couple but they are outlined with the "magic pink" color. Would appreciate it if someone could get me lined out. I am wanting to use the images on my Tilt and using the wisbar advance and desktop advance programs. Thanks
