A cab file is short for cabinet file. It is similar to an exe file for your pc only a cab file runs on the Windows Mobile OS.

If you don't have access to your PC you can install applications directly to your device with a Cab file. Many freeware sites have cab files you can download with your device's web browser so you can get new apps wherever you are. Try http://freewarepocketpc.net, it's a good one.
