Well, first thing I did when I got home is update to the new 2.2 OS (it came out that day). Supposedly it has some battery optimization stuff under the hood...
Anyway, it's a tad bit better than the TP, thankfully; at the end of a typical day I still have around 20% juice left. A typical day for me is about 1-2 hours surfing (unless I'm at home), 2-3 hours of calls, checking email occasionally (manually - no push), maybe snapping some pics if I'm out & about, etc. This is all with 3G turned ON.
If you want to almost double your battery life on the iPhone, you can just turn off 3G (or enable it only when you need to surf fast) - or use wifi if you're at a hotspot (free at any Starbucks or AT&T location). Either way, I pushed it pretty hard in the first few days and the battery was fine.
This was one of my biggest concerns about the iPhone, but I've been pleasantly surprised. Then again, I've always been in the habit of charging my cell phones at night - I've never had a smartphone that DIDN'T need that. Not a big deal to me - not like I'm using it while I'm asleep
YMMV...
