Switching from TP2 to EVO
Im about to drop the TP2 and move to the EVO. I can't stand virtual keyboards and really like the physical QWERTY TP2 has, so that has been hindering my decision a lot. I know the hardware specs of the EVO blow the TP2's away but I would like to know what some of your opinions are that have made the switch from TP2 to the EVO.

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
I always told myself that I would never go back to a virtual keyboard, after having so many typing issues on the HTC Touch. But after trading in my TP2 for the EVO, I couldn't be happier. The screen and, by association, the keyboard, are huuuuge, and I have absolutely no issues typing. This is coming from a guy with gargantuan man fingers too!

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
I actually am typing faster. The spell correction feature of the Evo makes it very easy just to type as fast as you can and as long as you are remotely close to the word, it fixes it automatically. I was a diehard physical keyboard fan as well coming from the TP2. I will never look back!!

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
no brainer...
I moved from a history of hardware keyboards...and I don't miss them one bit. You're talking a leap in specs from the Mogul to the Touch Pro 2. when you have one in your hand...it'll be night and day. The biggest thing is not the hardware...but learning Android...the terminology, the functions..and just basic getting around the O/S. |
Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
Personally, I think that the EVO virtual keyboard is much better than the typing on my TP2's old hardware keys.
All you have to do is let auto correct do its thing and you'll be typing faster than on your TP2 in no time. The size difference between the TP2's on-screen keyboard and the EVO's is no comparison. The thing is HUGE!!! Like everyone here as said, you'll love it. You have no idea how amazing it is! Android is an amazing OS. It'll just be a slight adjustment learning the new functions of Android versus Windows Mobile. But first and foremost, you'll see just how buttery smooth Android runs on a 1GHz Snapdragon. No choppiness what so ever. I have never used a hardware/software combo that works as well as my EVO. Check out this post for some software advice. Just do some XDA and PPC reading and you'll be all set. This phone is like crack. |
Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
Congrats, welcome to android. You won't look back!! ;)

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
I have a slighty different opinion. I struggle with the virtual kb. At times it's great and other times I hate it. It's my own fault as I'm old school and haven't still adapted to T9 etc. The kb on the TP2 is plain awesome and I prefer being able to actually feel the individual keys.
With that said, I still don't regret the switch at all. The screen responsiveness and speed of the phone still amazes. Touch-it happens. No waiting on a text window to pop up etc. The feel of the phone in general will make it tough for me to go back to a hardware keyboard unless they make a phone as thin somehow.... Will be waiting to hear your thoughts if you switch. cheers |
Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
The evo is amazing and android os is amazing. Most of the evo owners on here came from a tp2 anyway so that should tell you something in itself. I also have preached about needing to have a hardware keyboard but you should get over it and for me personally I don't think I will ever go back to a hardware keyboard ever again. The biggest thing though is learning android like someone else said not to mention the whole root process is far more complicated that running hard-spl on a windows phone in my opinion. Not only that but similar mods on a winmo phone you could do without hspl but with android you would need root access. But to tell you the truth as far as form factor and even hardware, the tp2 was a great device but its obvious main problem was winmo(still has some advantages though).

To the threadstarter, if in fact the keyboard is that important to you, you could always wait for the epic 4g, thats a very nice looking device with a nice hardware keyboard. |
Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
I came from a touch pro 2 and I love the evo keyboard...make sure to instal thee swype keyboard....you will actually type faster with it thanwith hardware keyboard

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
I too came from the tp2, as a previous poster stated, learning Android will be your biggest hurdle not typing. Trust me you're gonna like it.

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
screen is large enough to accomodate finger friendly keys, so soft keyboards are pretty easy to use. I used to be a hardware kb only user, but the 4.3" screen has made me change that position. Samsung Epic 4G will be out probably by the end of the summer, which has comparable specs to the EVO, but with a slideout keyboard, so that's another one to keep an eye on. I bet Sprint's WP7 device at the end of the year will have a kb too.

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
Well i went from the touh to the touch pro then the touch pro 2 all the time not going to the android phones due to them not being much better.I loved the large screen size. But when i seen how fast this phone is i could not go back. The only regret i have is the price im paying more now since i added a few more lines but besides the price plan im on now it has been easy to go from the tp2 to the EVO for me.

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
to tell you how much of a difference it is...
1 DAY after I got my evo I put my tp2 under a bus. world apart imo. you won't ever regret it. cheers ¡!! |
Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
congrats and welcome to the Evo forum. the adjustment will be small to be honest. Both are outstanding devices though. Plenty of people here to help so feel free to ask away!!

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
Have you looked at the Samsung Epic specs? That may be the phone for you once it comes out on Sprint. It's a little smaller (4inch screen) but it runs android and has a full qwerty keyboard. You might want to look into that before buying the Evo...If you've already gotten the Evo then...I guess you made up your mind...but I figured I would throw that out there for ya.

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
hey reigndropz I had a TP2 but sold it to get my EVO I only had the device for a couple of days and Im still learning all about android its a completely different experience then winmo but I enjoy the learning experience and I realy like my EVO so far and have no regrets
|
Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
i did the same and thought i couldn't live without a physical kb. but after getting used to virtual kb i can't see myself going back. i rarely used the droid's kb. only thing i used it for was to boot into recovery if i had problems.

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
I went from a TP2 to an EVO and back to a TP2. Yes, you will get used to a virtual keyboard, but the EVO actually limited my typing speed so the physical keyboard is definitely a must for me. Also, it's nice to be able to charge the phone once a day or once every two days instead of 2-3 times a day with the EVO. I use my phone for music as well and the TP2 beats the EVO hands down. The stock music player in the EVO doesn't know what 'Random' means. It will randomize the same small group of songs and play those over and over regardless of how many you have.
My suggestion is you live in an area with 4G and absolutely must have the latest and greatest now, then go EVO. If not, save your money and upgrade credit because better phones will be coming out. |

Man you guys are great! Thanks for all the input! Unfortunately though, it doesnt look like I can get my hands on an EVO just yet. All the stores around me are sold-out and we all know Sprint is out of them too. That EPIC looks real nice too...Sprint has really dropped the ball on this one, again. The only thing thats keeping me with them is that I cant afford to break their contract and get the termination fee. Otherwise, I would switch to Verizon.

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
This is from a former TP2 person who switched to Android. This is my take:
--if you're used to WM UI, the Android UI is easier but only after you get used to it. --If you're used to getting applications from commercial companies offering trials. Not so much from the Android world. --If you're looking for a single PIM (not like the one that claims to be free but charges $40 for the application to actually sync data), good luck with that. --If you want to use the calendar to set up customized repeats (such as every other week or every few days rather than daily, weekly, monthly, yearly) on your device even though you can set that up in Google Calendar, you won't be able to do that on your device. |
Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
Just Do It....
|
Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
I say wait it out for a better phone.
And Verizon is evil. My friend is trying desparately to get out of contract with them because shes had so many issues with her Eris and their customer service is horrible. But hey if that's what you want, pay the fee and have fun! |

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
I have a Sprint TP2 and bought an EVO 4g from best buy....... What an impressive phone! The large screen, the fast chipset, the front facing camera, the 8 mega pixel camera with the fabulous pictures! The awesome high def camcorder, nice big software keyboard, the easy to use andriod OS.... blah blah blah.
And as I start to use the phone I start finding out some of the other details. Like only 9 speed dials vs. 99 in winmo. The fact that you can't search contacts by company name, period. I don't think that you can even arrange them by last, first. It does not sync with outlook without exchange server, and if you do have that service I believe you need third party software to do it correctly. Basically, the whole contacts part of it totally sux. And you can forget me ever syncing my stuff with any google server. Gmail = donkey guts. I don't want to sync with gmail or google, forget it, they both totally suck compared with outlook. Not to mention the security concerns with having personal info on their servers. I don't want to take 8 steps backward in this area. Outlook works great and it’s probably the most used client in the world, why would google cut themselves off from those users? It dosent make any sense. Kind of reminds me of apple, which by the way, the iphone syncs with outlook MUCH better than android. How about the camera taking pics that are too large to mms, probably some setting somewhere that I couldn’t find, another thing I have to figure out how to fix. The EVO, or android OS simply does not have anywhere near the detail that winmobile has in the areas that are most important to me. I don't think some people realize just how powerful winmobile actually is, or how powerful some of th the programs are that are written for it. Oh, and I love the argument of "you don't need that option, or, just do it like this, It’s just as good!" This is the answer I seem to get all the time. I don’t want to do it how you do it, I want to do it how I want to do it, it will work better for me. The EVO with android 2.1 locked up a few times on me to the point where I had to reboot/pull the battery a few times, so don't try saying that winmobile is the buggy one. All the phones I have or have had have been buggy, all of them. Including the Iphone, our family has 2, a 3g and a 3gs, both are buggy sometimes. Battery life on the EVO was worse than the tp2, because I have the tweaks package put together by Goodthings2life. This is a perfect example on how tweak-able winmobile is. And as far as it being a snappy phone........ With that processer winmobile would be snapping all over the place too. I can't wait to see it in action. Yes the large screen makes the software keyboard better than the software kb on the tp2, WAY better. But the hardware kb on the tp2 still blows it away. No question. No hardware kb means that the software kb is taking up half of the screen.... there goes that big screen. And with my big hands it’s still not my choice. The slide out KB on the TP2 is better, period. I didn’t “get used to it”. The EVO is a nice phone, it really is, but I took it back and picked up my TP2 for now. Hey........ the tp2 has suck parts too. But I'm syncing up with outlook, all of it, perfectly! I have all of my speed dials, all of the detailed tweaks via the registry, use of my entire screen via the slide out kb (which is probably bigger than what’s left over using the software kb on the EVO) etc, etc. I want a phone that has a powerfull chipset, nice big screen, snappy processer, sync's COMPLETELY with outlook (correctly)………… So, I am going to wait and see what comes down the pike. Maybe that Samsung thing will be more to my liking (if they get the outlook sync thing working). |
Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
I put the company name in with the person's name. That way you can find everything fun. Also, the Bluetooth implementation lacks the versatility that I enjoy with the TP2.

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
I couldn't agree more Clem2, but if I posted that I would have been crucified here. You're going to get some responses of "but you can get an app to do x, y, z". I don't want to buy apps just for basic functionality I'm used to with the TP2.
But great post. I hope the Evo-fanboys don't jump all over it. |

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
Same here TP2 switch to Evo the hard part is getting us to the OS. It so different from WM. But at the same time it rocks. Now you dont have to feel left out about the Dev not make app for the WM. I'm a lover of the phy kb but im getting use to the SWKB.
Sorry i know is off topic but how much did you get for the TP2. Dont forget to complain to the FCC about the "Premium Data" |
Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
I came straight from a tp1 to the evo. I was hating the jump from wm to android after doing so, and was starting to regret it. But in landscape mode the typing is geting better, i got spell corect on, but it doesn't. But have been able to adjust to the screen and how it responds to the touch and typing has gotten faster. Just getting used to the fact of touch over pressure from my tp was hard to get used to. Sometimes when i fumble the phone around it will respond to anywhere i even barley graze it. Still working on that one.

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
As a reply to the comment text above. I feel ya on many levels, but some skip me. Everyone and their grandma in phsyc ward knew that android was google device specific. Why buy a google device if you have no intentions of syncing it with your google account when it pretty much requires a synce to work correctly? Using activesync on wmxp works great, syncs your outlook info geat, wmdc on w7 doesn't when you have to BUY outlook. I jumped ship on wm couse as many tp1s i went thru, the keep giving me an other one. 6.5 never made it to tp as an official and i really hate the way wm7 was starting to look. Add the fact that 7 was to be launched almost a year ago and ms dropped the ball on that, and now if we are lucky our new wm7/aka the xbox360/zune phone might be launhed this year if any device maker decides to pick it up the way android is moving forward. I really hate the fact the ms f'ed up and pushed the UD an other year cuz what they had going then would kill android, now they are going with a mp3/gaming device trying to compete with apple. If wm can make a 7 that blows away 5, 6, 6.1, 6.5 or even the crappy 6.5.x system without turning it into a mp3 player ( ipod touch ) slash gaming unit with copy and paste feature and install to sd/rin from sd that looks more like windows then i will jump ship from android. But i got so feed up with stock 6.1, hated 6.5.x and was so not looking forward to 7 that i jumped. Think about it, so did the manufactures. It's either web os, android, or iphone on all new devices. MS had given a good start, but with age comes replacement. Keep up, move forward, or move out of the way.
And I really want to go back to ms..... really cuz you are RIGHT wm is way more responsive, customizable, and powerfull. I do miss it. |

Re: Switching from TP2 to EVO
I am extremely on the fence and basically have 10 days to decide if I am going to stick with TP2 or get the EVO. This thread makes me want to switch though. Before now I have been wanting to stick with the TP2 and just wait out til a working dev made android OS was finished for the TP2, but now that I finally got my micro SD card and so far the quality has been subpar then what I expected... I am back to really doubting wanting to keep the phone. I don't have any issue with outlook or any of the things people mentioned in the thread except I really like the TP2's keyboard... It is by far the best keyboard I have ever used coming from BB's, iphone, and ect. I just don't think a physical keyboard is going to be enough of a reason if the TP2 does not effectively give me enough of a reason to not also carry around my ipod. Something I am sure the EVO would do easily.
