Third Party GPS?

Has anyone here had any luck with a 3rd party gps app like Garmin or Tomtom?

Re: Third Party GPS?

Garmin Mobile XT 4.20.50 works great. Only issue it has is that the satellites don't show signal strength so it will say signal lost about 10 seconds after you launch program. But it has no issues with locking in location and routing.

TomTom did not work for us.

Re: Third Party GPS?

You'll need to use a program like GpsGate to get TT to recognize the internal GPS chip on the 800w.

When used with GpsGate, TT works great.

Garmin works just fine for me. Gets a lock fast and keeps it.

Although it doesn't show satellite signal strength bars due to a minor square screen incompatibility, I never get a signal lost message 10 seconds after launch. The 2 aren't related.

Re: Third Party GPS?

I use TomTom and Garmin, both work on the 800w.

TomTom6/7 works on the 800w. Unfortunately, TomTom7 was ripped from an HTC Diamond, so it's not "really" available. TT7, does have a configuration for internal GPS, but since it was the HTC, the GPS will not function, unless you use a 3rd party software, like GPSGate to access the internal GPS. I like TT, because the redraw is fast and your location on the display is accurate. It's also very configurable. You can set alerts for POI's (Gas stations, libraries, golf courses, etc.) that you will be approaching on your route. TT7 has an alert you can set if you are exceeding the speed limit. Unfortunately, TomTom maps seem to be outdated.

Garmin can utilize the internal GPS on the 800w. It's UI is very simple. The redraw does lag on the 800w, so it may show you just approaching an intersection, when in actuality, you have already past it. Garmin maps are more recent, than TT. Unfortunately, as stated earlier, Garmin does tend to lose the time, but a quick remedy would be to turn off the phone radio, then turn it on, in order for the 800w to pick up the local time from the network.
