Windows Moblie 6

Does anyone know when the new Windows Mobile 6 is coming out and how us 700w/wx will be able to get this program?

The short answer is, "it depends". It'll most likely be up to the carriers (e.g., Sprint, Verizon, etc.) if updates to wm 6 become available. From what I've read there really isn't a huge benefit going from wm 5 to wm 6. I know this has been discussed elsewhere on this forum so look around some.

Later,
Coz

I emailed Ecare at Sprint a while back and this was the response I got. Doesn't look like we'll see an upgrade from them.

Dear XXXXXXXXXXX,

I can appreciate your interest in the new Windows Mobile 6, and the availability for your Sprint Together with Nextel phone. We are also very exited about the new Operating System which will support the higher screen resolution of 320x320 compared to the 240x240 you now enjoy. The short answer is that the OS is not upgradable like the software version of the Windows Mobile 5.

I have heard that the Palm 750 is being released with the new OS, but compatibility is still being researched for Sprint phones. At this point we are still offering the 700p and 700wx with the WP5. It does not look like these phones will be released with the new OS; rather, new phones will be developed to take full advantage of the improved operating system.

Still, this is not to say that some of the technology used to develop the WM6 will not be used to improve the WM5, and keeping your software version current is well advised. The Treo 700wx by Palm does not require in-store software updates. The user must go online to download the latest software, and then upload the update to the device by performing a sync.

To check your software and PRL version, follow the steps below:

- Press Start and select Settings.
- Select System, and then select About .
- Select the Phone tab if not already selected.

The latest version is Treo700WX-1.14-SPNT from 11/27/06. This is the current version on your phone, and there are no updates currently available. Updates will be posted at the following link: http://www.palm.com/us/support/treo/...downloads.html

Sprint appreciates your business, and will strive to bring you the latest technology possible. Thank you for the question; I enjoyed finding the answer for you.

Wow, that email almost seems like they know what they're talking about. I doubt the 700w/wx will be able to upgrade to WM6.

I have a Dell Axim x50v that had WM2003se and I upgraded it to WM5. Fast forward almost a year and I'm still on WM2003se on the thing. WM5 was awful on the x50v. So much so that Dell quickly stopped selling the upgrade.

Granted Palm and Dell are two different companies, I bet this would happen as well.

By the time the WM6 devices come out, it's time to get a new phone anyway.

I agree, when WM6 takes over there will be bigger and better devices and it'll be time to upgrade. Well maybe not bigger...
