Questions about esn

Ok so a friend of my mine just brought a treo from some one and the first two numbers of the esn hex are stratched out... so i take the phone and go inside to phone info but its not the right esn number(well thats wat the tech from sprint told me)... I was wondering is it possible for a sprint store to just scan the esn bar code under the battery... anyone have any other suggs....

they should be able to just scan it. i just came from sprint and they just bar code scan the numbers
