Lost everything

I don't know if this has been posted but I read as much as I could and saw nothing. I'm new to this whole format so please be patient with me

last week I got a call from a number that I didn't have saved, no one was there and the call ended. when I pushed end, my today screen got real messed up. all the text was there but the colors were messed up. so I went in and changed my today screen to a different one, it worked. so I went back to the one that I liked and it still was messed up. so I popped the back off and hit the reset button. It boots back up and I had th recalibrate my screen, time and everything. then all my settings went back to factory! I lost contacts, email, my ringer, alarms, almost everything! My pictures were all still there though. the weird part is that it showed that my alarms were all reset but they still went off with their discription at the right time.

The other issue... I went in on my own to see if I could find my contacts I saw a bunch of folder that had messed up names like a bunch of squares and triangle that I've never had before. It almost like I have a virus if that's possible! I never found my contacts but maybe you can help...

So now I'm wondering, are my contacts still here? My alarms went off so just maybe they are. where can I look to see if they are there?

Yes it's very possible to get a virus. Do you use activesync? I use mine religously due to the possibility of losing data. Now and then I have to do a hard reset which wipes my phone clean. Then I sync to get all my contact and email info back. All the programs I run I keep on the storage card instead of the phone for this very reason. Now there's a huge chance your problem wasn't a virus. Some third party programs cause error's which are non-recoverable. I've personally had my phone lock up due to program errors and when I did the reset the same thing happen to me as it did you. The trick is, is to have your important data backed up or stored in a place that is not compromised by a hard reset.

No I haven't but guess I will from now on! the only 3rd-party programs I have MS live search and thats about it... It kept all of my programs though, just lost contacts

Now what about the folders being all messed up with folder names like a triangle or a sqare?

What does a hard reset do, take it back to factory?

yes it restores it to it's original state........ incase you don't know how to do it... all you do is take the battery door off hold the red end call key down and take your stylus and push it in the reset hole for just a second.... keep the red button down until the screen asks to hit the up key to reset then let go and hit the up key on the 5 way navigation button

so if I do that then everything gets zapped? it will reset everything to factory. folders, contacts, pictures, everything?

Yes, hard reset resets everything to factory.

Cool, I hope this clears everything up!

So after I do this just go back and install my programs back in?

Now I should probably start a new thread but I'll just ask it here, once I restart this and go in and install the new version and such... How do I get some of these neat things I'm seeing people do here? I seen one guy that added the weather to his today screen? Do I need a speacial program for that or is it something I download?

Ya i went thorugh all that today! there are some really cool designs in there! are these programs free or do most of them have a purchase price?

Now also do you use a PC to edit it or can it all be done from my PDA?

yes you have to purchase the programs.............. and you do it on your PDA
