PRL UPDATE

I am sure this has already been discussed, but I want to make everyone aware that has a Treo 700wx that there is a PRL Update. Many people are not aware. Most of the threads only discuss the 700p, but the same update is available for the 700wx. Here is how to go about it. First, check the PRL version you have. Go to Start>Settings>System>About>Phone and then scroll down to check PRL. It will be a 5 digit number, it should read 20224, that is the latest version. If you have anything less, follow these steps. Call CS (*2), ask to have your account flagged for the lastest PRL update. Then wait about 1/2 hour and dial *2. It should prompt you and say that your phone is being updated. An automated voice will let you know that the update is complete. Hang up and then do a soft reboot (this is done by quickly tapping your reset button). Then do Start>Settings>System>About>Phone and scroll down to check your PRL version. It should now read 20224.

Most threads do not get into detail about how to go about PRL Updates, and the average user does not even know what a PRL update is. This is why I decided to do this thread.

Things I have noticed improvement in:


* Signal Strength
* Battery Life
* EVDO Internet Speed

I highly recommend this update be done for all 700wx users. Hope this helps.

PRL updates (the 20xxx series) are general, across-the-board updates for EvDO devices.

I do dispute some of the assertion made about PRLs, namely "increased signal strength" and "better battery life".

The former is not possible for non-roaming purposes as cell phones automatically pick up new Sprint towers without the need for PRLs (preferred roaming lists). So that is just non-sense.

Same with better battery life unless you "roam" a lot since you'll have new towers available.

Having said that, PRL 20224 doesn't add much, in fact THIS is what it does:

Network Acquisition
No network acquisition changes.

Domestic Roaming Coverage
Changes were made to the PRL to assist customers with the Treo 700p. The Treo device was unable to receive voicemail indicator and place and receive calls while roaming in Norfolk, Virginia. The issue was confined to Treo devices.

Additionally, a change in carrier preference was made to Digital 800 CDMA roaming systems in central Wisconsin.

Customers who live or travel with tri-mode and digital dual mode devices or EVDO devices can obtain a PRL update to take advantage of this change.

Available via OTA servers on Friday, September 15

exactly, it certainly doesn't hurt or cost anything so it's fine to do.

I just think people have this notion that PRLs do waay more than they are specified for and that just isn't the case.

For others, here are PRL 20223's changes, also mostly not relevant for most users:

Network Acquisition
Changes were made to optimize acquisition between the Strategic Roaming Alliance partner in Oklahoma and Sprint. It is recommended that all customers in Oklahoma markets obtain a PRL update.

Domestic Roaming Coverage
No changes.

International Roaming Coverage
? PRL 10034 ? No changes for international roaming partners.
? EVDO PRL 20223 ? To assist the acquisition of EVDO network in Canada, it is recommended that customers traveling to Canada obtain a PRL update.

To determine where international roaming coverage is available today, reference Wizard or view the international roaming maps on Sprint.com by accessing the following link and performing a search for coverage. www.sprint.com/internationalroaming

hmm, the description of PRL 20223 talks about EVDO in Canada. I know I had that PRL installed when I was there a few weeks ago, but I was unable to obtain a data connection. Phone calls worked fine however. Is there a way to get an EVDO data connection when roaming?
