Re: Thinking About Making Move to Pre instead of TP2 Help me Decide

I know this is a Pre thread, sounds like most of you are sold on the Pre.... so was I, before I actually had a chance to use it and compare it to my old and busted 800w....

The Pre is beautiful, no doubt about that. The screen is gorgeous. The keyboard is very usable, actually much better than I thought it would be. The OS is insanely speedy and responsive. It was cool to be able to launch a bunch of crap and easily switch between it all.

Still, I could not keep it as my main phone. Believe it or not, i started missing my winmo. I think my biggest gripe with the phone is the lack of customization. You really can't do anyting different or unique on it. maybe that is how it is supposed to be? Load up a couple of apps on a winmo phone and it can look like anything you want, spectacular, or spectacularly ridiculous, the point is, your pretty much free to set it up exactly as you want it.

another issue i had, and this may just be because i am spoiled with the keyboard on my 800w, having to slide out the keyboard was a pain. I understand that this was designed in such a way to make the phone small, yet the screen enormous. Looks great, but doesn't feel great. Try sliding out the keyboard with even just slightly sweaty or oily fingers. The finish is extremely slippery, maybe a soft touch finish would have worked better here.

Finally, a huge flaw in my opinion, althought surely easily fixed, there are absolutely no notifications when the screen is off. For example, if you get a missed call or a txt message, and you don't happen to be right next to your phone, say you left it on your desk and walked away... when you come back to it, you would have no way of knowing you missed anything unless you actually picked up the phone and turned it on. The point is, even just a flashing LED or something to let you know, "hey, u have a txt or a call" would have been great. I think this was the 2nd most annoying thing about my experience with this phone.

Anyhow, that is my 2 cents. i tried the Pre, and after 2 days, went running back to my 800w, never looking back on the Pre.

I agree with the frustration of a lack of notifications. Really got used to seeing my Diamond's LED's flash in one way or another to let me know of missed event. I'm hoping this gets added to the Pre asap. No reason why it can't be. Just a matter of time IMHO...

Re: Thinking About Making Move to Pre instead of TP2 Help me Decide

I had the Touch Pro and loved it. I now have the Palm Pre and beginning to love it as well. It runs very smoothly, the speaker is great, the battery life is better, and multi tasking is awesome on the PRE. The TP could be customized out of this world. Both phones are GREAT, but right now I think that I am feeling the Pre a little more. The Apps are limited right now, but within time there will be more. But I am sure that I will get the TP2 also. LOL

Could anyone comment on the syncing of calendars and tasks?

I'm aware it cannot be done with activesync and requires an exchange server. What programs are you using to sync up outlook and how are they performing?

I use a program from the palm app store called PocketMirror. You install a component on your PC and then connect your Pre to your local wireless network to sync. It works great, though it doesn't sync tasks.

So what PC/desktop program do you use? Do you still use outlook?

I've been doing some looking at Calendar options for the Pre. I've read that some users are syncing MS outlook to google calendar, and then to the Pre. That method doesn't sound very efficient to me (but I've never done it personally).

Anyone use Thunderbird or other calendars? I'd like to sync tasks too....

Re: Thinking About Making Move to Pre instead of TP2 Help me Decide

Ok, so my wife is really wanting a pre. She has a TP now and we'll be out of our contract so upgrading is an option. Question is don't live near a Sprint store to play with the phone. It does have a capacative screen but does it have a glass face or plastic(iphone-glass tp-plastic). That' my only question.

Re: Thinking About Making Move to Pre instead of TP2 Help me Decide

I don't think I could go back to my diamond after using the pre. It does has a little of a short coming with the apps not completely there but they are coming. Multi tasking on this thing is awesome. Great for road trips with all the mapping software which works flawlessly.

The screen is 100 times better than the diamond and tp because of it's size and responsiveness. I can't say the diamond was bad but when I compare them, I just don't see an advantage over the pre. The Htc products are great at what they do being windows and having a endless apps catalog, but that's it.

I looked at all my apps on the diamond and the only thing I really miss is opera mini. The pre has an awesome browser but sometimes I just want to just look something up quick without having to use multi touch to resize the page.

I am going to use the phone for the 30days and then make a decision but I am really leaning towards the pre. Ooooh did I mention the functionality of the notifications not being obstrusive. I'm sorry but windows 6.5 isn't even an upgrade and to think of buying the tp2 and looking forward to that kind of an upgrade. No thanks

The Palm Pre has a plastic screen that is seamless. Meaning that the rounded edges and tinted screen has absolutely no seam where the housing and screen meet because its one solid smooth piece. If this makes any sense... It's a very nice design like no other.

Re: Thinking About Making Move to Pre instead of TP2 Help me Decide

Im with you on this one OP. My wife and I have the TP and love it. As some of you know I have cooked my own Roms in the past. I have not made any updates to my last rom but now Im wondering if I want to keep with WM and go to the TP2 or go with the pre.

I know we can customize the WM to pretty much anything we want and the pre is beginning to get there as well. As a matter of fact look at this: PALM PRE CUSTOMIZATION

As many of you know I work for Sprint ATS so I have access to both devices all the time. I just had gone over 7 TP myself and 4 on my wife's line just due to keyboard and screen issues.

I will wait for the TP2 and then try both side by side and decide which one will be best. Ill make a comparison on both devices when i get them.

good luck guys.
