Re: Thinking About Making Move to Pre instead of TP2 Help me Decide

My last 5 smartphones before I got my palm pre were windows mobile devices and I can't believe I stood how crap they are for so long. I've always believed that the only way a device with a touchscreen based UI will be successful is if the UI is easy to use and intuitive. Palm's WebOS is all of those things on top of being very elegant and easy on the eyes - things like the card system are one of the "duh" concepts that seem so obviously great when you're using it. I always felt like the WM devices I had (especially my mogul, touch, touch pro, diamond) were more about making the UI look pretty than actually being functional and easy to use. Yes there have been some quality control issues with the slider and such with the pre - but no more than with any other HTC phone I've had. That and the fact that the phone has not frozen or crashed ONCE in the week and a half I've owned it. I love WM phones flexibility, but seriously it is not worth the constant pain and aggravation of a buggy crappy OS. Using the Palm Pre after winmo phones is like running after suddenly loosing 100 extra lbs - the user experience is transparent, which is why I think it's going to be a hit for Palm.

I hope WM7 is a complete overhaul, and they design the UI from the ground up to use Capacitive screens and everything meant to be done with your fingers and not a stylus. Beyond that stability is key. It's harder to control stability when you don't control the hardware. Hence why the iPhone/mobile osx, and mac/osx platform has worked well for apple.

Re: Thinking About Making Move to Pre instead of TP2 Help me Decide

I played with a Pre on launch day and really liked WebOS, and the phone overall. My biggest concerns are the keyboard (not sure if I could get used to it) and above all build quality of the phone. I've been reading some really bad things over on precentral.com about screens cracking for no good reason and sliders becoming sloppy eventually making the phone reset in worst case scenarios. These could of course just be rarities in comparison to all the people without problems. I just find it troubling how many are reporting issues at precentral considering they're just a small percentage of the Pre community.

However, with all this said I'm still thinking about getting the phone. Which speaks pretty highly of the device (or poorly of WinMO ).

This particular problem is caused by the battery casing area in some units being slightly too large and the battery jarring when the slider is closed too hard.

I have this problem on my current unit and it is fixable by putting a couple layers of electrical tape on the end of your battery to make it more snug. Probably should just be a temporary fix while you go for a replacement if you have this problem, though.

Yea dude but how many complaints there been about winmo phones? and we all still took the risk. I don't have a Pre yet but im getting one soon. The problem with winmo phones are, it takes too much time tweaking and flashing to get it to a decent state. When we shouldn't have to do all that, i'm starting college soon, and I don't have the time to be flashing and tweaking no more lol, need something that works out of the box.

Also the IPhones app store was even more limited when it released, so i'm sure Palm will deliver with apps. They stated they are going to re make most of there old apps, witch is many. So I see light,

[Start rant]
getting annoyed with all the IPhone talk recently, I have nothing against Apple, but the fanboys annoy me. Its like they take everything Apple does and big it up. 1st IPhone 3.0 update, the update that gives you things that should of been there in the beginning (notifications, MMS, Copy & Paste). Apple fanboys are going crazy over it, when they should be saying "About ******* Time". Then the IPhone 3GS, a very minor upgrade that I find pointless.

[End rant]

Glad Palm came out with almost everything day 1, thats how it should be. Just add video and fix that battery life bug (although coming from TP we find this to not be a big deal) and we are all set, after that just focus on Apps .

Kudos to Palm, and to state again I have nothing against Apple (Love my touch) just the fanboys.

Re: Thinking About Making Move to Pre instead of TP2 Help me Decide

Well I am probably the minority here but I think I will be going with the Touch Pro 2. I like how the Palm Pre works but I can not get over the keyboard. It's just not functional for me. When I went to the touch pro I instantly loved the keyboard. The keyboard on the Pre works but really is a step backward. I dont know why they couldnt have had a keyboard like on the Instinct.

It would have been the perfect phone for me had the keyboard been better thought out. I text alot as well as send many e-mails so this was a big feature for me.

Now besides that the form was very intuitive. I think once one because familiar with the menus they will have no problems navigating around. This is typical with any phone.

Being able to have multiple applicatons open is nice but in all honesty the touch pro does that too. The only difference is that on the pre they are readily available with a flick of a finger. On the pro you just had to go to task manager and go from there. Nice on the Pre but it's not like the Pro is lacking.

My last gripe is the exchange server is not working yet. I cant get too mad because the phone is new but you would think with all the other Palm phones that are out and work this should have been easy too.

All in all, the Pre is a great phone but since texting and emailing is a large portion of what I do, I will be waiting to see what the Touch Pro 2 can do.

thas what is all about bro. people need to emphasize on whats better for them rather than anything, the pres kb is fine for me but we can all agree with the kb on the pro2 being better for more comfortable txping for heavy texters like youself. enjoy your pro2

Re: Thinking About Making Move to Pre instead of TP2 Help me Decide

Windows Moble 6.5/6.1 are great for customization but they are still behind the curve (as a former mogul, touch, touch diamond user I know). I've had the palm pre for two days and continue to be impressed. Here are a few gripes I do have however:

1. Lach of padcast section/support
2. Some slowness at times
3. More apps and sdk already
4. More robust mp3/video player

The touch pro2 is a hard core business phone, if you need international go with it (sim card slot will be available). The voice conference features are awesome as well. But it has a large screen and small battery so you'll need an extended battery. I would stick with a touch pro for another year if you can deal or go with the palm pre if you can't. The touch pro2 inner hardware is virtually the same as the tp (cpu, ram, etc.). If you can wait for Windows Mobile 7 your it will be a game changer. Iphone and Palm have some very stiff competition coming next year from what I've seen.
