Apple Warns iPhone OS Users of Jailbreaking

Yesterday in support article HT3742 Apple announced that modifying ("jailbreaking") the iPhone OS may cause instability in their devices. Users that have made such modifications to their iPhones and iPods have had encountered numerous issues. Apple provides the following examples of these issues:

Device and application instability: Frequent and unexpected crashes of the device, crashes and freezes of built-in apps and third-party apps, and loss of data.

Unreliable voice and data: Dropped calls, slow or unreliable data connections, and delayed or inaccurate location data.

Disruption of services: Services such as Visual Voicemail, YouTube, Weather, and Stocks have been disrupted or no longer work on the device. Additionally, third-party apps that use the Apple Push Notification Service have had difficulty receiving notifications or received notifications that were intended for a different hacked device. Other push-based services such as MobileMe and Exchange have experienced problems synchronizing data with their respective servers.

Compromised security: Security compromises have been introduced by these modifications that could allow hackers to steal personal information, damage the device, attack the wireless network, or introduce malware or viruses.

Shortened battery life: The hacked software has caused an accelerated battery drain that shortens the operation of an iPhone or iPod touch on a single battery charge.

Inability to apply future software updates: Some unauthorized modifications have caused damage to the iPhone OS that is not repairable. This can result in the hacked iPhone or iPod touch becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone OS update is installed.

Apple notes that the unauthorized modification of the iPhone OS is a violation of the end user agreement and many deny service to any modified iPhone or iPod.

Devices affected by this are iPhone, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch (2nd generation).

Could this be a precursor for other operating systems?

They've been doing that since 1st gen. Jailbreaking Iphones make them lose money. They cannot make jailbreakers to stop it completely but Apple knows that they can get it to a minimum level. Even woz praised jailbreakers coz this cat and mouse thing with Apple and the Dev team makes the device more interesting. Woz even use a jailbroken Iphone and autographed a Hackintosh. That's way cool for an Apple no.1 employee.

If they stop strong-arming the use experience and take an Android like stance on things people wouldn't resort to doing so.

Hell, the madness with the app store recently gave birth to a new wave of jailbreakers who may have never considered doing so.

Apple is the biggest advertiser of why you should jailbreak, they're too dense to understand this.

I always thought that they made the 1st gen Iphones super vulnerable to unlock on purpose. It was unlocked the 1st month it was released. Looking back on it again, They prolly made that move to find out how the rest of the world would want the Iphone. Sure enough 1st gen Iphone was exported all over the world knowing that it only exclusive to AT&T.Iphone 3G hit the rest of the world on it's 2nd gen and it took the Dev team Almost a year to soft unlock the thing. Just the right time for the next gen to arrive.

haha... this is total bs.... as i personally jb 3g and 3gS models frequently... not only that, i also stress test all of the above posted errors... i'd say of done about 30 of these devices as of yesterday... not including the older models...
hysterical... stupid apple... thats why you aint gettin flash sucka! :-p

oh i forgot to add that tethering/data/voice is better as well everything else is in the jailbroken devices... all of them... all the time...
still sucks as a phone IMO... but people love it so, might as well get the best of it! and trust me, anyone scared that they can find out over the air (OTA) meaning that through the internet or otherwise your phone could send some sort of hack signal to apple, i assure you that it cannot be done OTA... Happy hacking!

how can apple even tell if its been jailbroken or unlocked, can't you just relock it if something goes wrong when you return it?

Yep, you just need to restore it prior to bringing it back to the Apple. Just becareful when you're surrounded by a few Applist on the streets when your iPhone is unlocked and jailbroked though... they take this very personally.

i unlocked a friend of mine's 2g iphone last week (he got the new 3gs) and the thing that astonished him was that a lot of the things that the iphone 3gS touted is on an unlocked iphone. So he felt he just wasted money uselessly on an apple device if the 2g can do everything the 3gS can do - but better due to the support of the internet communities...
