I've long used a dedicated gmail account to aggregate emails from various sources before forwarding to mail2web to get pushed to my phone. I don't particularly care about syncing contacts and calendar (especially since mail2web has caused thousands of duplicates over the last couple of years), but I'd like to find a way to get gmail pushed directly to my device.
It is not PUSH e-mail

I have it set to "Pull" every 10 minutes so it feels the same, and as far as battery life concerns there has not been a noticeable change. (I received an e-mail as I type this)

I do agree that Mail2web's service has been excellent and certainly worth the price they are now charging. This is merely information for those who do decide to go the "free" route.

As far as spam controll Gmail has been doing a wonderful job for me. I migrated my personal website e-mail to Gmail and whereas I used to constantly add address to my blacklist I now just review and delete my spam folder. Just make sure you have the spam filter turned to ON.

Now throw in a quad processor rackmount server from Dell with 16 GB of RAM, three hot swap, 15K RPM, SCSI hard drives in RAID for mail storage (450+ GB) and also two hot swap, 15K RPM SCSI drives in RAID just for the Windows installation (80 GB).

Add in three years of same day, 24/7, four hour response time on hardware, and I say we got a good deal. What did you pay for your Exchange 2007 server?

Me personally, I hate the outgoing signature they add to promote their product - I can't use it for anything professional.

Fair enough but its much better than Mail2web, having used the 2 already.

when you use seven, can you delete emails off your phone and have it not make any changes on the server?

Greedy is the wrong word, but charging people alienates them in the eyes of users who just need push email. After being riddled with downtime I switched to hotmail for push as soon as I heard about them starting to charge. Hmmm, pay money or get the service for free? I'll take free, thanks.

Hey mail2web, don't let the door hit ya! Nothing personal but you've been out-bid by microshaft. Of course, I'm sure this was a calculated move, there were plenty of moochers so mail2web is going to reduce their client load by dumping us free-service-seeking leeches.

Yes, this is set by default if I'm not mistaken.

Re: mail2web live will cost atfter may 1,2009

How did you setup gmail to replace mail2web. In particular the contacts and calendar sync.

The two most important features of mail2web was instant contact sync, and the ability to add people to a calendar event and have it approved and synced to your calendar.

This is important to me because my wife loses her phone alot, and when she does her contacts go with it. Mail2web to the rescue, I would just assurion a new phone, plug in the mail2web credentials and all her contacts were there , even the contacts she added just before She lost the phone would be there because they were auto synced.

I also like to help her remember events by adding them to my calendar, and inviting via outlook to the event. She would receive an email, approve it, and it would automatically be added to Her calendar with and alarm and everything.

So those to things, auto contact sync, and calender event sharing via email with approval are huge for me and would be great if gmail can do that.

Thanks in advance.

Guess I will have to keep paying for it. I tried to find some free solutions and the only thing I sorta liked was dashwire, but it doesn't do calendar appointments.

I must say that Mail2web did a seamless job of doing what you just described. Google sync can do the same as far as I can see, just through a not as familiar interface.
I see all of the options to invite individuals to you r appointments and even have them change the settings if you so choose.

Whenever I got a new WinMo device or just upgraded the ROM I always did the same thing when it came to returning my contacts, calendar, etc to my device. I have it down to a science.

When you decide to test a new service here are the steps to take.

First thing is ALWAYS make a wired activesync backup of all information onto your home computer.

Next, since you have all of your contacts on your phone and would like them to stay there I will give you the steps to create a sync setup for google servers.

1. Create GMail account if you do not already have one.

2. On your device....
Activesync -> Menu -> Configure server -> Server address = m.google.com
Place a check in the box "This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection.

3. click NEXT...Enter Username for gmail account (name@gmail.com)
4. Enter Password
5. Place a check in the box to save the password and click NEXT.
6. Sync only your Calendar and Contacts. DO not place a check in e-mail or tasks.
*Do not click FINISH yet.....
Now for the most important step....
If your device is Current and you wish to have the server updated and nothing deleted during the OTA Sync...
..Click MENU ->ADVANCED
Under "If there is a conflict" Choose "Keep the item on my device" Click SAVE
Click FINISH..
and SYNC!!!!

If you replace your device and you need your info placed back on the device from the server, choose the option "replace the item on my device".

You have to set up e-mail sync through Programs-> Messaging.. Which I have described earlier.

Although synced separately on your device all of the information is interlinked on the Google server. Give it a try. Hope this helped.
