Multi-Select in stock mail app

OK, two questions about the stock email app:

1) Has anyone figure out how to select all messags in a folder to delete them. It seems all you can do is check each one, one at a time, to get them all selected, then click delete.

2) Is there anyway to permanently delete the messages instead of them going to the trash? if not, is there a way to just say "empty trash" rather than having to again check everything and delete them?

If the answer is, 'there is no way to do this" for both questions, does anyone know of a much better email app than the stock one?
