Who's gonna get this on sprint?

Ever since both Verizon and Sprint have opened up their networks last year we've been able to use devices from one carrier on the other since it's the same cell radios I believe.

I'm just wondering if Sprint's Rev A is compatible with Verizon's as I'm a little behind on the comparrison.

Is any Sprint customers out there going to get a Droid and run it on the now network? Or are you going to wait? Sprint & Verizon typically get each others phones within 3 to 6 months of each other excluding the Storm and possibly the moment.

Never heard of Sprint opening their networks.
Am I missing something?

Re: Who's gonna get this on sprint?

Due to a lawsuit back in '06 or '07 both Sprint and Verizon had to open up their networks which I think you'll find some info under Open Device Development or Open network.

Basically from what I remember is that if you have a Device from one carrier and have the MSL you could use it on the other carrier.

The only limitation I remember at the time of the announcement was that each company had to do their own testing to ensure the device wouldn't cause any issues on their networks and therefore each year each company was suppose to text x amount of phone and certify them to be able to be used.

From my understanding all manufactures would have to do is supply each carrier with ESN's and testing devices which I don't see any problem with that since both carriers work with the same manufactures.

Now to the roadblocks... This isn't heavily advertised yet as two or three years into this I'm sure neither carrier has devoted too many resources to this and it also begs the question about exclusivity on the phones in that maybe the competing carrier may not receive testing phones or ESN's for x amount of time. Since this hasn't been heavily advertised I highly doubt regular customer care or at least newer employees would even be aware of this and most certainly would require a conversation with tech support (though many seasoned employees are aware of the announcement however no one knows of anyone who's actually tried, but I'm sure the calls will start rolling in as the phone wars finally heat up on compatible carriers).

On the flipside Nextel's almost sole device manufacture was Motorola until recently so I'm sure there's a good relationship there and either Sprint will get the Droid 3 to 6 months down the road or maybe allow us to activate it under Sprint.

Also two years ago we had more dumbphones than we had smart phones and most dumbphones used java/brew which was tied to the carrier and would limit most data services to that carrier though you'd still be able to use voice services on the other carrier. Now with Windows Mobile & Android I honestly don't see why we wouldn't be able to switch carriers as long as the device has been certified as those platforms are not carrier specific (though they do have carrier specific apps) and even if the software was tied to them we'll always have PPC Geeks and XDA to fix that!

Hope this helps and is why I'm thinking it is indeed possible.

This is the best news I have heard since deciding that verizon is too expensive for me.

Re: Who's gonna get this on sprint?

I have been poking around the net trying to find out more about this and found this page:
http://community.sprint.com/baw/thre...+verizon+phone

I really want a droid, but am not willing to spend the extra $1800 over 2 years that it would cost over sprint for a comparable plan. My current contract expires in mid Feb, so if Sprint hasn't released a better phone by then, I may buy a droid and switch it over, if possible. I am going to talk to folks at a Sprint store and see what they have to say about this. I will report back if they say anything helpful.

Re: Who's gonna get this on sprint?

I've been hearing certain people say they have better luck switching a sprint phone to verizon which I think is odd since they both have to comply with the settlement from the previous lawsuit.

Then again I'm no expert on this matter (though should know more next week) but I agree the only issue is getting the ESN onto Sprint's network and if need be we could look for an Android ESN DEC/Hex changer here or at XDA. Maybe I got ahead of myself but from the lawsuit and the original press releases I've assumed people have been able to transfer devices though I've never even thought about it until now as I've usually been pretty happy with Sprint's offerings compared to Verizon though I wish everyone would carry an iPhone but that's another topic all together.

I doubt anyone will have much luck at a sprint store but let us know if you have any luck. As I also mentioned regular customer care reps may not know about this either and may require a conversation with a tech support agent. I say that because I doubt covering the ability of activating a non sprint phone is covered in any real dept in any training at this time and while the info should be available to any employee they may not know where to look and some will undoubtedly tell you no because it will seem ridiculous to them if they've never been told.

But lets just say I know people who do work for wireless companies for years and they were the ones who remembered the ability to use a phone on another carrier and that each company was working on a way to allow this to comply with that settlement via the Open Device Network I think.

I too will post more definite info this Sunday night or Monday night when I've had a chance to talk with some seasoned employees

Re: Who's gonna get this on sprint?

From what I remember reading on the matter, the lawsuit required the company you were leaving to release the phone, but did not force another company to accept said phone.
