WiFi Tether Problems (Rooted)

I am rooted with running 2.0.3 from SMUpdate. I was trying to use WiFi tether tonight and could never get it to work with my laptop. My laptop has built in wireless and works well. I could not even get it to detect the Android Tether except for once for a few seconds. It showed up and I clicked on it to link up and it would not connect. Then it disappeared again. This is one of the reasons I rooted in the first place. I really want it to work.
What am I doing wrong?

Also, on a completely different topic, I have been running at 800mhz since rooting. I noticed my phone getting very warm after a lot of use tonight so I went back down to 550mhz. At 550mhz, my phone is considerably slower and scrolling webpages is a choppy nightmare. I took it all the way up to 1ghz and it smoothed out and then locked up. Now I am back down to 800mhz and I scrolls well but again gets hot after a bit of use. The thing is that at 800mhz, it runs like it did before rooting at 550mhz. Should I just go back to stock and forget about it or am I missing something here as well? Rooting doesn't seem to have benefited me very much.

Re: WiFi Tether Problems (Rooted)

Not sure, I did the same ROM as you and I did wifi teather. It worked fine except was slow as CRAP. Im with you as its one of the reasons for rooting.

I do believe that my overclocked 800 is just shy of the performance of the pre rooted droid, it seems glitchy and jumpy at times.

I also tried to turn my bluetooth on the other day and it just sat there and said "turning on"

????? im sure it will all be fixed.

By the way, I did the paid Sholes Mod for rooting, updated ROM to 2.0.3 also..

Re: WiFi Tether Problems (Rooted)

I havent had any of those problems here, but I'm on a different ROM than you guys. I'm usung the blue smoked glass ROM from Adamz clocked at 950mghz. It doesnt get warm even when charging during use and the wifi tether works excellent. I think if I were you guys I would mail the sholes MOD team to see if this is a common problem and if they have a fix for it.

Re: WiFi Tether Problems (Rooted)

I just returned back to stock using the newest version of the updater. I rerooted so that I could set the minimum processor frequency to 550. It runs well like this. Does 2.0.2 have as many problems as 2.0.3?

Re: WiFi Tether Problems (Rooted)

Not to knock the sholes rom, but I prefer the bugless beast rom. It is as the name implies. I didnt realize how much faster it was until flashing back to the stock briefly.

I haven't had any problems with the wifi tether on this rom and have found it to be faster than the wired tether I had on my titan.

Re: WiFi Tether Problems (Rooted)

I am thinking about trying the 2.0.5 rom that came out today, but the 2.0.3 left me with a bad impression. Has anyone tried it yet???

I would like to try other roms too, but the SMUpdate has the ease of flashing down to an art. I still have alot to learn about Android customizing and easy is a major plus for me. I don't know if I'll ever get out of the WinMo train of thought.

The thing is, my phone runs really fast 99% of the time at the stock frequency. After flashing, 550 was a slug and 800 took it's place, but added heat issues. At 1ghz, I noticed faster speeds, but it had stability problems. OC'ing and wireless tether were the only reasons I flashed and I benefited nil from being OC'd and wireless tether didn't even work.

So if I wanted to run different roms other than sholes, would someone mind giving me a breakdown of what I need to do exactly after rooting? I have tried to follow some of the threads, but I get lost trying to interpret some of the computer lingo.

Re: WiFi Tether Problems (Rooted)

Im 100% with you. I want to try new ROMS but, I dont know to what point the Sholes got me to. I also think im stuck in Windows Mobile mode where you plug it into your computer, hit some buttons and flash it.

I just dont know where to start from now, I know im rooted, but what next?

As far as I know the Sholes Mod makes a Nandroid backup for you, is this useable to flash another ROM?

Do I just take the update.zip from another ROM, install it to SD and roll with it?

While flashing the Sholes Mod, it asks me what Gallery I want and a few other things. Are they usually rolled into a different ROM or is that somthing else I need to install?

From what I understand, you can keep all of the data on the phone (downloads from market?) if you keep 2.0, but if you upgrade to 2.1 you you have to wipe it?

Sorry for the long post and for so many questions but it looks like the OP and I are having the same problems. I am wishing that i just rooted the hard way so I had a better understanding on what steps the Sholes Mod actually did for me. I dont even know if I can or how to start from scratch and do it all over again the hard way. I have no problem in the world chalking the 5 bucks to a loss. LOL

Re: WiFi Tether Problems (Rooted)

If you want a sholes rom, after rooting you can go back into SM Updater and pick one. It will ask you if you are sure you want to flash it. It will then reboot and begin giving you the options of what you want in the rom. You don't have to wipe data to run 2.1. You only lose you apps and data if you wipe, but they should be backed up if you did a nandoid backup or if you backed them up with Astro. SM Updater does create a nandroid backup for you before it begins flashing. All you have to do to reinstall it is go into recovery mode an select to install the latest backup. You can also choose to install other backups or a rom on your SD card. I finally figured most of it out last night after messing with it for a while. If you want a sholes rom, all you have to do is open SM Updater and choose. Once you choose which one you want, it will begin to DL it for you , and when finished, it will install it with your approval. Pretty much all you have do is accept anything that it wants you to do.
The only thing about the sholes mod is that once you root and flash the first time, it will break/change your recovery mode form then on (or atleast it did mine). For some reason, it will not let you create your own nandroid backup from the recovery. It will only create one for you before flashing to a new rom. One good thing about the SM Updater is that it will let you opt to install the 2.0.1 stock rom and unroot if needed.
