Re: Swype for Android preview released

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I have been using ShapeWriter for a few weeks, and tried Swype today. For me, ShapeWriter just seems to be recognizing words more accurately, functions quicker, and I like the fact that words that are close always appear in the banner bar, as opposed to the gnarly pop-up Swype uses.

That said, I love the long press in Swype for symbols and the multi-page symbol/number pads. If ShapeWriter could include those two features I would be thrilled.

Also, according to the things I have read, Swype will not be released to the public as a stand alone app anytime soon. They seem to be focusing on OEMs including the software, much like Samsung with Swype on the Omnia2.

These darn OEM deals are getting in the way of good software getting in the hands of the masses! The Android port of the TouchPal keyboard got pulled so they could honor their OEM deal.

So far Swype seems to reject a fraction of the rejections I got from ShapeWriter. Maybe it likes my poor penmanship!

Why does this version not have a setting to auto-cap the first word of each sentence? I does for "I", etc. , but not for anything else. This works very well, but I can't say that I like it much more than the stock KB. I can probably still type faster with T9 than Swype. Entering slang or abbreviations is a bit slow with Swype. I know it learns these words but it sucks when you type it for the first time because it is always trying to guess what you are spelling. It would be nice to have a toggle button for this.

-Just type the word once and it's in the dictionary. IE: tap each letter then the space bar individually. This tidbit should save you some time.

-To do a capital letter swipe above the keyboard after the letter you want capitalized in a big arc. I know it's not quite as intuitive as automatically doing it, but it takes next to no time at all.

Awesome! I didn't realize it would do that. That helps so much with caps.:occasion5:

My trial version just ended, or so it says. I didn't realize this was a time limited trial. I even tried redownloading and reinstalling. No luck. It still recognizes that I had it previously. Has this happened to anyone else?
