I'm glad you have decided against that course of action. Now, if you had insurance from the get go, then of course you would make a claim, but not now. I would either buy a new phone or replace the screen and digitizer myself. You can check ebay.

Also, a couple weeks ago, radio shack was having a deal on Sprint Touch phones. They were going out the door for $29 + tax with an extended service contract. In my opinion, that is almost worth it, so long as you are currently on sprint and you don't mind giving them another 2 years.

You can also check with Best Buy. The service they host, Geek Squad, can usually fix things like that for relatively cheap compared to the manufacturer. They quoted me $100 to replace an LCD screen on my digital camera, while the manufacturer quoted me $150. It's always worth the time to just ask.

Good luck.

its not like he is insuring a house or anything. This should actually be covered under warranty. I understand that this could be considered fraud but, seriously, its a cell phone. This is why you can't add insurance after the first ten days(i believe). If they let you add it, by all means take advantage of that.

Yes... by all means, commit a crime. I'm not going to argue with you about the legality of the issue. The fact that there's a loophole in the system does not mean that it's legal. The fact that a person would have to lie about it simply proves my point. Sure, it probably would be covered under warranty if the phone was actually lost, or if the phone was actually stolen, but unless those things happen, then you would be lying. It's wrong ethically and also legally to lie about what has happened and when it has happened. Don't abuse the system, if you do, it will only ruin it for the people who have legitimate claims. Insurance rates and deductibles go up, everyone complains... but hey, you win in the short term if you cheat, right? Everyone else has to pay the price in the long term though.

But back on topic. I posted links to a new LCD/Digitizer combo and just the Digitizer by itself in my original post. They're incredibly cheap, and if you have the know-how to replace it yourself it wouldn't be a bad idea.

Great. This is exactly what I was hoping to find by posting here. Thanks. I think I can replace the touch screen fairly easily by using disassembly instructions found online.

In case any one has the same problem as me and comes to this thread in a future date, the disassembly instructions can be found here: http://mikechannon.net/PDF%20Manuals...-%20Elf%20.pdf

That isn't insurance fraud if he's allowed to buy insurance and then make a claim. I believe that most insurance companies will not allow you to make a claim for 30 days if the phone is not new anyways. Insurance companies are not stupid. They have already thought of any way you could try to screw them and have protections in place. Like any business, rates are based on what the consumer is willing to pay and profitability. They wouldn't do it if they weren't making money.

Could be just a bad digitizer. It's not that hard to replace, about $40 all in and an hour first time, but if it's something other than the digitizer you threw that time and money away...

i haven't replaced a digitizer on a Touch, but I've fixed several Wizards and it's pretty easy to do.

I assume it is a similar process. The hardest part, for me, was getting the solder to flow properly using only 15w... I didn't want to accidentally melt the ribbon.
