First ActiveSync after hard reset - slow, if working at all

Getting bored and need some reassurance or a fix....... could not uninstall some apps fully so opted to hard reset and build back up. First attempt at ActiveSync gets connected and tells me it is synchronizing but no numbers against the items (e.g. Notes 4/25 etc) and no sign of progress - after 15 minutes gave up and searched for help. Deleted device, set up new partnership, selected only 1 thing to sync as per recommendations - notes, smallest - same, no info and just a spinning green icon. Is this the way of it on first sync or is this a known problem that I can deal with? Thanks in anticipation....
