Sad to have to respond to your own query but I guess it shows the power of trial and error - in settings there is a USB to PC item which has a single checkbox for enhanced network functionality - this comes up checked after a hard reset, uncheck it and the Activesync problem goes away. Now watching a status bar creep to the right....oh joy, back in the real world.
