keeping data flowing while phone is in suspend/unattended?

is there any sort of registry edit or hack of some sort to keep the data going when i hit the power button or the phone goes into suspend after a minute? i'd like to keep an instant messenger running in the background, but as soon as the phone is in suspend, the instant messenger disconnects.
thanks
-Randy

Unless I am mistaken, S2U2 gives you the option to just turn your screen off when you press the power button instead of going into suspend mode.

hmm i can't believe there's no way... i also can't believe that i'm the only one that wants this :P
sprint tier 3 tech support says it's a wm6.1 "feature" and that 6.0 doesn't do it, so that kinda tells me that there's got to be some way

Are you useing WiFi or your phone carrier's data connection? WiFi goes off when the screen goes off. I usually use Sprint's data, and when I use OctroTalk, it stays connected when the screen goes off....

Re: keeping data flowing while phone is in suspend/unattended?

i'm using sprint data. i've used just about every instant messenger out there and it will work fine as long as the phone is on, but as soon as i put it in standby, i am unable to recieve IMs and when i turn it back on, it says i'm connected, but no one recieves my IMs unless i disconnect and reconnect

Re: keeping data flowing while phone is in suspend/unattended?

This may be a terminology thing on my end, but when you say standby, do you mean either pressing the power button once to make the screen go black or letting the screen go black after it times out?

by standby, i mean pushing the power button to turn the screen off. unattended, i mean letting the screen turn itself off.
the IM client disconnects in both situations

Re: keeping data flowing while phone is in suspend/unattended?

strra i completely get what your saying, and i'm sure there must be a reg hack for this. This is basically the same concept as putting the phone on standy while music continues playing uninterupted. it would just have to be extended to data. I think this is a great idea, as when i am tethered and the phone goes to standy, i lose the conn. Also, i think that one issue that would arrise would be that battery drain would be inscreased, while on stanby, thus maybe someone could write a small program that can control this option.

Sorry, I didn't look at the forum this is in.... I have a Touch Pro, so I guess it behaves differently than the Vogue. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: keeping data flowing while phone is in suspend/unattended?

I use fring, which is a great free IM client. Either suspending or unattending, if I get an IM it will wake my phone from standby and tell me i got an IM. The only time I lose connection is if i receive a phone call in which the data connection is severed while talking, then i have to disconnect and reconnect.
