I know this doesn't fix the problem, but still worth the mention. I found out about touchpal from a fellow HTC user when I first got my touch. I downloaded the free trial and after using it I glady paid the 13 bucks it costs to keep it. Give it a try http://www.cootek.com/download.aspx
if you like it you can download sipchange for free and it will make touchpal your default keyboard even after soft resets.
