Bluetooth Performance & SMS

I've scanned the hacks and the site so if this has been addressed, apologies. I just purchased a new all in one stereo and gps system for my car and the device has quite a good bluetooth phone interface. Most of the features work with my HTC touch but not all. The main one I can't figure out is SMS. It has the ability to access send, receive, and display sms message on the screen. the manual states that SMS will become active on the unit if bluetooth sms is supported by the device. When I've paired the HTC touch, it is not active. The services that the touch says are available for the paired device are wireless stero, serial port, and hands free. Is there a way to make this work -- hack or otherwise?
