Alltel data use with GPS

I've got an Alltel HTC Touch and have been playing with the GPS. I got it to work with the help of Shadow-Tech. THANKS! One of the requirements is to have "Location on" in the phone settings. This causes a data session during GPS use. (Stand alone GPS software not Google maps, etc.) Is this data session just using information provided by the towers or is this considered regular data just like web browsing and billed the same?
I don't have a data plan (yet) and don't want any surprises!
