unlock questions

i have the vogue and was wandering how i could tell if it was unlocked...i had the hook up for a while and purchased it from a friend that works at sprint for a steal.he said it was unlocked but idk.is there anyway to tell.i've read that for you to run another rom it needs to be...i'm currently running android...does that count??any help would be taken to heart
