No signal crashes software=hard reset

I get very limited reception inside my workplace. Most of the time I remember to place the phone in flight mode before I go inside. If I leave the phone on and it loses its signal for 10 minutes or so the software begins functioning erratically. It continues to worsen requiring a hard reset to return to normal operation. Soft reset does not work, removing the battery does not work. Of course a hard reset causes the lose of all my saved data and a return back to factory default settings. I finally invested in good backup software that does a great job of restoring my device after the hard reset, but that isn't the point.
It shouldn't be happening. Has anyone else had this problem and if so any luck in fixing it.
I tried today to update the ROM according to Alltel's website thinking this might help, but it killed the phone, I'm now waiting for a replacment!

As far as I know I will be receiving the most up to date touch. This is a free warranty replacement I doubt there will be any upgrade.
