super noob on gps

i just flashed omj custom rom and I am trying to get googlemaps to work. After some reading, I learned that you have to "prime" your phone. I was using gps viewer. I hit scan and it found port 4. i then hit open gps and a bunch of data starting scrolling at the bottom. After several seconds, the gps status tab had what I believe 8 satellites. i then opened up google maps and checked Use GPS and it is stuck there for several minutes looking for satellites. I thought I already had found them?

You have to set up google maps on port 4.

if i do that then i won't need to use gps viewer?

Gps viewer is just that. It's a program that evaluates how the GPS functions, sattelite locks etc.
