I realize it is just semantics, but the GPS is hardware that is built into the phone. The radio/rom is what decides if it is locked/unlocked however.

The newest verizon ROM does enable the gps, but only in vz navigator which they charge $10 a month for (pretty ridiculous as their rates are already the highest in the industry to begin with).

Of course there is a hack to get around that limitation & allow the GPS to work in all the 3rd party apps also.......

Which newest ROM are you talking about? Has verizon released a new ROM/update for XV6900?

do a google search for the maps and amaze and will take you right back here to xda or search on this site. seems freewareppc.com or one of the freeware sites just sent out a "free" google for ppc update. i downloaded the cab bang wiz and its installed. only missing link was the internet connection but my phone internet connection now is tether to the pc and then had full maps.

of course that dont do any good cuz if im tethered then i can just use my pc and the gps is still locked on vzw. you can unlock it by using an unlocker and cooked rom. there is a least one or more really good threads here and on xda about unlocking the rom. it seems easy but you gotta be really careful of what you do and be sure to use the vzw stuff not sprint. im still to hestitant to go there so i have std rom still.

then you need internet connection and if you have carrier connection you should be set. im waiting for wifi to be solved on the 6900 for free data. i dont need gps or data for mobile right now but i know that is two areas i will go some day.

As far as I know, the 6900 does not have WiFi capability (someone correct me if I'm wrong). If the phone does not have the hardware, no update is going to add it I wouldn't think??
