since upgrading to the official WM 6.1 ROM my battery life isn't as good as it was before the upgrade, is this a known issue or is there anything i can do about it?

This worked for me: Start>Settings>System>Task Manager>Button>Change the default to "End programs by tapping "X"'

This setting will prevent programs from running in the background. My battery life is much better with this setting.

Re: battery life

You might also consider using a program such as SmallMenu, Magic Button, WisBar,etc. Not only do they let you completely close out of a program, they will list all programs running. Magic Button is free, SmallMenu has a free version and a paid version (w/ more features...about 8 bucks), WisBar is $14.95, I think, w/ a trial period.
