Alltel GPS Issues

I am just about at my wits end, hopefully somebody here can help me out. I have an Alltel Touch, and am unable get my GPS to lock. I'll describe the details of exactly what's happening, and what I've tried so far. Hopefully someone here can shed some light on this frustrating problem.

Problem: The farthest I have been able to get is to have GPS apps (such as Holux GPS Viewer, HTC GPS Tool, Google Maps) see the GPS, but they will not lock. In GPS Viewer and GPS Tool, the phone will sit with no satellites found for about a minute, then it will find one or two satellites (always due north, overlapping each other). Then those satellites will disappear for 20 seconds or so, only to be replaced by completely different satellites in the same position. It varies between showing 0, 1, or 2 satellites, never more than two. Very rarely, it will flash with 6 or 7 satellites all over the map, then disappear as soon as they appeared. I have left the phone on and searching all night, and it will NEVER lock. Whether I am indoors or outside seems to make no difference.

I have unlocked my phone with 2.31 unlocker.
I have tried the 3.37.10 Alltel radio.
I have tried the 3.37.15 Sprint radio.
I have tried the 3.42.30 Sprint Radio.
I have tried the 3.42.50 Bell radio.

I have tried half a dozen roms (OMJ, dharvey's, etc) that have been posted on the forums, with "GPS locks in 6-8 seconds 100% of the time", no change. I have tried copying virser_gps.dll into the windows directory on Roms that do not include it. I have tried using hgrays GPS Kick Start. I have also tried the Assisted GPS Hack.cap posted on the forums. I have tried setting the registry value for GPS mode to 1, 2, 3, and 4. I have tried running GPS enabled kitchens 19588, 20226, 20270, 3.02, andno2chem_19209.

I also read the thread on push mail disrupting the GPS, but this problem occurs even before I set up any email accounts.

I have tried all instructions in this thread as well, so please do not link it.

Oh, and I have always made sure to check that the Location Setting was on under Phone, Options, Location.

If anyone can think of anything I am missing or that I should try, I would greatly appreciate it. I am really at my wits end with this. I never thought getting the GPS going would be such a pain.

well join the band wagon. i also have an alltel touch and i also live in tampa like you. i really think its the location that is the problem. i tried every rom, radio, fix, reg edit every thing on this site 1000 times and have got 1 gps lock for like 30 seconds. and never saw anything again.

your best option is to wait for the offical alltel 6.1 gps rom to come out but who knows when that will be.

heck they will probally carry the htc diamond by that time.

Make these changes in the registry.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\SUPL AGPS\

EnableAGPS = 0
EnableGPSSmartMode = 0
EnablePDEIPFromNV = 1
GPSMode = 1

I'm using the 3.42.30 radio. I can get locks using ANY rom. Also try running the Alltel PPST.

Then go outside where its clear and let GPSViewer run for a while. The first time it locks will take a while. Give it 10 minutes.

Re: Alltel GPS Issues

Well if you were wondering when the 6.1 update will be released you are in luck. I just so happen to work for Alltel. I'm whats called a Data Consultant, which means I train the retail reps on all of our data products. I cover from Brandon to the east coast. I'm not breaking any rules by telling you the update that was previously on the HTC site was taken down because the new 6.1 / GPS update is going live soon. We were going to just take it down and put the new file up on the same day, but there were issues with the bluetooth headset when roaming, so it was decided it would be best to take the old update down. The 6.1 update is set to roll out by the end of this month, but I have seen a few emails suggesting it may be pushed back a week or so.

I guess I should just be patient and wait for the update to come out, but I wanted to have the GPS working now so I could show some of the sales reps and customers how the GPS would work when it does come out.

Anyway, if anyone has any ideas please let me know!

Re: Alltel GPS Issues

I'll see if I can get those settings for you tomorrow. The BlackBerry does use A-GPS, and I know just who to email for those settings.

I flashed to the 3.42.30 radio, loaded a GPS Enabled ROM, and made those registry changes. Didn't help at all. One thing I did notice is that it didn't even show the random one or two satellites anymore. Is it possible those satellites were really signals from the Assist part of the A-GPS, and turning off the A-GPS in the registry made them disappear too? If so, that means I'm not picking up any actual satellites. What is going on?

Re: Alltel GPS Issues

no, check the location setting in the phone options... for alltel i think an alltel agps server will allow faster locks (only speculation tho)

Edit: it takes me about 5-10 min while driving to get a lock, calibration?
