By the way, why would you turn your Data Connection Off if you are not using AGPS? This is contradictory and exactly what the link I posted suggested. Isnt this why you ARE getting 8 sats in 20 seconds inside? Because you turned off the Data Connection? This is the whole point of the solution suggested in the thread I posted

Im not sure why you would want to prevent people from trying it out. Its not like it will hurt their phones or like they have to do Registry changes. Its just a suggested solution because it worked for me.

By the way, I did change my registry setting to NOT use AGPS and I still didnt get a GPS lock. I wasnt about to Hard Reset again and I think this is why people want solutions, because they dont want to Hard Reset after having their phones all set up like they want it. After spending so much time configuring your phone this can be very annoying and upsetting.

So, just let them try it for themselves and cross out this suggestion as a possible solution if it doesnt work.
Point well taken. My only noob curiosity was why use AGPS if not necessary. My post are not intended to prevent people from trying it out but rather to stimulate conversation on the subject such as your notes above and to increase my own knowledge based on what experiences I'm having on the subject. However, if my posts seem to have that tone then I retract them.

Actually, the OP asked the question if turning off data connection stopped GPS from working. I tried it with data connection on and off just to see if I could simulate the problem. No luck as I was able to get the locks immediately in either case without agps of course. Yes, the solution that you linked does specifically relate as you say to data connection. Again, I was just trying to simulate the problem and share the experience.

your phone can still get a quick lock in stand alone mode within ~4hrs & ~few miles of it's last lock. that's when it's noticeable, and as I reported, the reg edits don't prevent the phone from starting an a/eGPS data connection. there is a way to prevent this, but then your subject to your existing sat data.

Thats cool, no worries. I just had the wrong impression. By the way, like its said above, Reg Edit doesnt prevent aGPS to work. I think this is true cause I tried to disable aGPS before finding the solution suggested in my post and I still couldnt get any locks whatsoever.

The GPS programs detected and connected to my GPS system in the phone but could not find sats or if they were found with GPSViewer, it wouldnt lock in to them eventhough it would see about 7 sats or so. Kindda fishy.

PS: By the way, many people do use AGPS if supported by their phone and service and if one can find the solution to their problem it is more convenient to use AGPS because you get quicker and more accurate locks using Towers and Sats at the same time.

Re: GPS function do they need Data connection?

I was in a similar situation. I was in Canada and didn't want to Roam Internationally. So, I put my phone in Flight Mode. The GPS would not work at all in FLight Mode. I was using Garmin-XT. I tried every regedit that was posted and nothing. As soon as I turned off Flight Mode, it would get a lock. I wasn't using the data connection or the phone.... but Flight mode turned off the radio which would then turn off the GPS. I even posted this a while ago on http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=31539

Re: GPS function do they need Data connection?

I tried TomTom with data connection turned off using the Modaco "no data" cab and couldn't get nothing. I tried it again with data connection turned on and got instant locks. It needs data connection to get the intial lock and then you can turn off the data connection through comm manager. I expect to incur a small roaming charge when using this in the States.
