GPS issue with official ROM

Installed and upgraped my Touch this past week. My only issue with the ROM is the GPS and interactivity with GPS mapping software - it's very hit or miss and buggy. I have iguidance 4.0 and google maps and have tried using both with GPS using turn by turn directions to my office. Both failed miserably. After locking in some sats, it would move along as I traveled, then pause for several seconds and then catch up, then pause again and after several minutes, it would ultimately freeze my Touch. This happened with both programs on several successive days.

The weather was bright and sunny and I was traveling on open road highways. Iguidance reported an average of 5/9 sats locked and googlemaps showed 3 or 4 sats.

Nothing running in the background, other than activesync with MS exchange.

I have not tried any of the registry hacks yet. Should I? If so, why?
