What exactly is a "ROM"

Sorry for being a complete newb, just got my first new phone since one of my really old lg's so I'm completely new to this pda/smartphone stuff.

BTW, I got the verizon xv6900, which I understand is the same thing as sprints touch, and the HTC Touch.

So, like the title says, what exactly is a "ROM"

and what is this 'cooking' and 'kitchen' talk all about?

I would like to get into all of this, but don't really understand it without knowing the termonology.

Thanks

Re: What exactly is a "ROM"

Welcome to Geekdom! The ROM is basically the brain of your device. This is where your OS is located, as well as the various files which allow your device to perform various functions. It's job is much like that of a hard drive on a PC. Your device comes with a stock ROM from the manufacturer, in your case, HTC. Many of us will create or "cook" ROMs to enable additional features, save memory, or for other reasons. The program for cooking a ROM is the kitchen, oddly enough. Once a ROM is cooked, you flash it onto your device. If you're looking to get into cooking, review the forum for the HTC Touch. There's a huge amount of info available on cooking your own ROM, how to flash the ROM, and most importantly of all, the precautions you need to take. If you're not careful, you can "brick," or permanently disable your device.

That's the Reader's Digest version. Good luck!

Re: What exactly is a "ROM"

Say I don't want to cook my own ROM, is it easy to install another persons ROM? or is putting any sort of ROM on the device considered cooking?

by the way, thank you for the responses.

Cooking relates only to creating your own custom rom (that you can always share) When you use someone else's rom, it's called "flashing a rom" and dHarvey has a great tutorial on it in the Vogue upgrade forum. It's a sticky. It is very easy to flash the roms here...almost too easy. LOL

Enjoy!

Re: What exactly is a "ROM"

WOW! I gotta commend you guys. On a lot of other forums, basic questions such as the OPs would have been greeted with something like " hey noob theres a search button on top, learn how to use it!!!". Glad to see that doesn't go on around here, or at least its not common practice. Also good to see the op comfortable to ask. There are some exact things I wanted to know when first started playing around with this phone, but didn't have the guts to ask. So I searched and found the answers.

Good luck!!!

Re: What exactly is a "ROM"

That's n00b, n00b. :P

Check this out to get you started:

1) Flash ImCokeMan's Unlocker
2) Flash Sprint Stock ROM
3) Flash a ROM you find
4) That's it.

Here's a quick summary (and no, that isn't me so no Thanks).
