xv6900 best way to get quick gps lock?

have radio 3.12, gps viewer, and google maps. sometimes immediate lock, other times not at all (from same location). what causes this ? soft resets dont improve this either. i usually open gps on the viewer then open google maps. have ppst , too. also are there any free programs that have audible driving directions ? thanks
