tomtom gps only works if I use another gps program first...????

Just like the title says.. it only works if I start the Sprint nav to find the satellite first... is there any other way to get this to work without having to run the 2 programs at once? Also I am not able to shut tomtom down .. always shows it running in the lower part of the home screen.. even if I shut it down in task manager.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
