Yes, the rainbow screen will always be displayed when doing a ROM update. It will start with the rainbow screen, and then eventually turn to a grey screen with a blue progress bar. You will hear (windows) disconnects happening if there is a radio update. It's normal.

What state is your phone in now? Can it boot into Windows?

If so, then get it to activesync with your computer first... then rerun the .exe. It will disconnect and stuff as mentioned, just wait it out... when it's done it'll reboot back into Win 6.1 and ask you about the time zone, etc.

If not, then you'll need to go the SD card route to recover.

yeah i just pulled the battery and it started back up fine. i didn't know that was normal. thanks and ill give it a whirl.

when mine was disconnecting it was saying that windows could not verify active sync and needed to be tested, and would let me download the software, ill try it from the memory card tomorrow i have an extra sd card.

You need an SD card (preferably blank and formatted FAT32):
- Extract the 2.nbh from the official release .exe using something like WinRAR.
- Rename 2.nbh to VOGUIMG.NBH and put in the root of the SD card.
- Pop it back into the phone and put it into the bootloader mode.
- It should reflash from the SD card.

when you say PREFERABLY blank, meaning it doesn't have to be?

Are most new sd cards FAT32 already?(i thought i've heard this)

I've heard mixed reports of people flashing from SD with stuff on it... I've always copied whatever was on it off and just left the .img file. Yes, most cards will come FAT32 already.

I've also heard mixed results about the SDHC cards and flashing... I always stick to the 512mb that came with the phone for flashing purposes.

I also found this about the 260 error:

• ERROR [260] : UPDATE ERROR
• This error occurs when there is an "open port error" before upgrading the CE ROM image.
  
  Solution: You can reset the device and run RUU again. If you still encounter an "OPEN PORT ERROR" again, reset your computer and try again.

well that would explain why my phone is stuck at the rainbow screen. i keep getting that 260 error.

So you've rebooted your computer (I'd do a hard power off/on)... and you are able to activesync properly, and still getting the 260 error?

i opened my own thread on this specific error. but yes i have no problems active syncing until the update starts.
