Re: htc touch gps
I got a HTC TOUCH. I upgraded the rom to version 3...and Iunlocked the GPS. Then I downloaded a freeware soft to test the GPS. I got 9 satellites on my PDA. Please note that I have restricted my dat aplan and internect connection with sprint. Still I can use the GPS. I checked my account from sprint to see if they have recorded me with data traffic and I found nothing. It means that my connection to the satellites is not through sprint, but direct with the satellites. Now I think that all I need is a 3rd part software.
Try this and give me a reply. |

Re: htc touch gps
You CAN use GPS without data access. You need a standalone GPS program like GPS Tuner, NoniGPS or Garmin. I have tested it with my phone in flight mode with no phone service. It takes more than 30sec to get a lock, but DOES work. This was tested in the middle of a lake in the mountians with no phone service. :)

Re: htc touch gps
You can obtain a lock onto satelites without data using Programs such as IGo and TomTom, I do it myself on my old Mogul (thats disconnected and Wife it uses only for the pda and GPS now), and currently can also access TomTom and accurately navigate on my Touch while in flight mode w/ no DATA being used.
This has been documented to DEATH a hundred times over. Data is not needed. |

All Right people, I am in Italy for a little while with my Sprint HTC Touch and can not get a lock on satellites; here are the tests I have made: - I have tomtom with European maps that works well, I can search things etc, but never gets a lock on satellites. I have used it with American maps when I was in Texas and it always worked very well but I have never specifically tested it in airplane MODE. - I have installed HTC GPS tool and it sees the com port and does all the tests but only sees ONE satellite apparently, but I am not sure that is correct because I checked a website with the satellite real time positioning and there is no sat there (maybe some fake stuff). - I use a laucher for tom tom and it says "wayting for a valid satellite signal" but never locks. I have tried with radio on and off and it does the same exact thing and I have waited for 10 minutes but no lock. - I am in a suburb so the sky is clean as well as the orizon. - I believe the phone needs to be told where to look for satellites but I am not sure how. Now, if you gays have any suggestion I can try things here and this can be helpful for many other users. Hope to hear from you guys soon and please do not begin fights over who is right, I am a Graduet Student and I know quite a bit about software, GPS and cellphones  , and I red all the treads so far (that is why I am saying this:disgust: ). I will try the suggestions and tell you guys who is correct after testing so we can live happly everafter. Thank you very much in advance and Marry Christmas to everyone. |

Um...you dont, I am running my gps sftware just fine without a data plan. It worked great when I had a pay as you go, and it works great now with a data block. All it means is that you will not have a quick lock becuase the aGPS is blocked. Sure my lock time went from 5 seconds with the pay as i go, to 5+ imnutes without any aGPS assistance. But data is not required to run the program. |
