But data is not required to run the program.

You are right. If you are using the standalone chip in your phone you don't need a data connection. Don't believe me? Shut the phone radio off in the Comm Manager and try to get a GPS lock. It might take longer than aGPS but it can be done. So before you go out telling people you need a data plan, why don't you try doing it with no data connection/phone off.

Im confused. I read his response twice, and he is in agreement with you. No where does he say that a data plan is needed. In fact, just as you, he said that data is not needed.

Hi everyone, apparently nobody in this thread cares about finding out the truth about the GPS capabilities for the HTC Touch but everyone is happy about arguing bulls**t.

Now, for the good news, I am in Italy near Milan and I went around today to test the GPS and I have to say, it really sucks. I am using HTC GPS Tools, a little program that tells you interesting info about satellite reception and here are the results:

- in my house I can get only one satellite with poor reception.
- in open space (as open as I can get even if there are always some buildings around me) I got up to 5 satellites with 2 or 3 with good reception (up to 37 on 40) and once I locked on the satellites and the radar showed the position and location of satellites around me and my position as well but I lost it almost immediatly.

Bottom line is, either the antenna is not powerful enough or the program I am using is not so good in locking on satellites and keeps on losing them. So, if anyone of you has any suggestion on a good program to check if it is possible to lock on a position or if anyone has a log file to be used to help the sofware to find the satellites, let me know.

Tis will be my last post here unless somebody responds with a reasonable suggestion because I am a little tired reading all the catfights of the bloggers on arguments totally unrelated.

I wish you all a Marry Chrismas or Happy new year and I hope to get some help soon.

wow....high expectations for someone who hasn't contributed nothing to PPCGEEKS.

What carrier are you on? What rom are you using? Thats vital information to get a correct response.

My Tomtom/Juicy 4.3 rom GPS navigation works like a charm.

Curious. What spammerbot are you referring to?

Dear Stevedog1, you are correct about me being new to this forum but I hope you do not reserve this arrogance toward everyone you do not know. However I do understand the amount of people who abuse each other in forums in general even if I hope you won't make assumptions about me (it is hard to covey voice tones in a letter and I assure I am calm and respectful toward your seniority in this forum).

Anyway, I have the original Sprint Rom version 3.0... etc which is the latest one enabling the GPS radio and I would prefer not to flash my phone because everything works well and the GPS is great in the US. As I said I don't know if you are in the US or in Europe but if you have not used your GPS here in Europe or in Italy, please don't just make assumptions telling me yours works perfectly.

At this point my question is: is the Rom you use any different from the standars Sprint one especially on the GPS compartment?
Have you had experience in locking satellitess without using any data plan for a long time so that the phone does not know where the satellites are?
Is there any program working on WM 6.1 that can obtain those informations and get a lock on satellites without the need for a data plan?

Thank you very much for your responce, Marry Christmas everyone and I willl talk to you soon.

Just going through some old posts and saw that this one hadnt posted correctly. Original was each internal component part #. so ppl could see "no wifi", "yes stand alone gps reciever built into the buetooth chip", unfortunate the post is obviously null now.

You may need a data plan to use the ant. assisted triagulation for the the signal towers. but if you have a GPS reciever that talks via bluetooth, the device can and does link up and run software that will work very nicly as a travel companion. I have a VZ6700 I used for just that and it has never been a "Phone" while in my care and I have done the same with a 6900 and a Hure from ATT. used NoniGPSPlot and Google Maps.
