Syncing phone with Vista problem

I have tried to do a search on this but i was wondering if anyone had ever experienced this problem. I connect the usb cord to the lil adapter and then to my phone and my computer never recognizes it the charge light turns on and i can go to a computer in the other room and it connects it must be my computer or vista. I have tried the mobile device update and still no fix is there somthing else im missing...thanks in advance if anyone is able to help me
