After a week, back to my centro?

I have been using a new sprint touch for about a week. I have not done any customizations to it as I do not know if I will be keeping it. I am not sure what a 'cooked rom' and a windows customization could offer in terms of making this easier and smoother to use, but I am exploring some options. Below I will list a couple of problems I am having with the touch, I will start with the worst to the least.

Touchflow interface is slow for me, not at all responsive and cumbersome to use.
Navigating the phone and its options can be difficult at times. Try hitting the end call button after dialing "1" for example. (I suspect this would not seem so bad if the phone didnt respond with a lag)

The standard keyboard options need improvement, and I understand that there are options.

Text messaging does not have a chat mode like in the palm os, which is awesome.

The battery life is a little weak IMO -maybe I just got a bad battery.

The only way to make it better involves a bit of work and a possible voided warranty.

What should I do about this? I am good at modding things in general. My 360, Wii, PSP, Xbox are some things I modded. I am sure that I could mod this. But it will require several hours of research to do it right. While I have been doing some research, I haven't decided whether to go back to Palm or stay.

How much better and faster is the new sprint rom for instance? any input on just updating to the new 'leaked' rom is appreciated. I was thinking of installing it, but I was wondering if sprint is releasing a new official rom soon.

Re: After a week, back to my centro?

I just installed my first ROM today, it really wasn't difficult at all....

I would recommend:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=25335

Literally follow the instructions verbatim, it really is simple. I had a Treo 755p before this, and Windows Mobile blows the Palm OS out of the water.

btw, with that ROM, you get chat-style texting (which is embedded in WM 6.1)

PS: In terms of a keyboard, check out PCM Keyboard! I highly recommend it.

Re: After a week, back to my centro?

Is there a different phone utility? I mean a better interface for when making phone calls?
Is the battery life and reception the same or better/worse after ROM update?

Re: After a week, back to my centro?

I'm in the same boat as you protomind. I have the Centro and picked up a used Touch for $180 including a Seidio extended battery. JUst a bit of background, I started years ago with the WM OS and thought this is the best, mods, tweaks, and all that good stuff. Then I needed a new phone and the $99 Centro and Sero plan, well I jumped on it. The Palm OS is nice, I did some tweaks to the UI and installed some programs, all is working just fine and I learned the Palm OS. One thing that bothers me is I still can't figure out when I sync a program over where does it go? Anyways, I now have a Touch with WM 6.1 Rev A and GPS, still haven't changed ESNs online as I wanted to see how the Touch flashed and if it worked OK. I now have to relearn the Cube thing and how it all works.

I am using JD's Hybrid ROM. This ROM is equipped with Touchflo - however the cube has been eliminated. (I hated the stock cube because of it lack of configuration options) I installed the SPB Mobile Shell, which provides full access to frequently used programs, weather and most frequent contacts from the today screen, without excessive battery drain. Additionally, with JD's hybrid ROM combined with the 3.37 radio upgrade and the ppst.cab install I have access to great GPS, which I use with iGo8 installed on my Touch.

JD's ROM is very stripped down, runs extremely fast and the touchflo is very responsive.

IMO

You got a link to JDs rom? I may give that one a go. You say it improves battery life too?

What is the general thought about the touch's reception BTW? It seems that my centro gets better service. Has anyone a thought on the subject?

Re: After a week, back to my centro?

Pronto, funny you mention that. I just switched ESNs from the Centro to the Touch this morning and I'm always switching between 1x and EVDO. Maybe the Centro dosen't show a 1x or EVDO but it seems the Centro does get a better signal, IMO.

I"m runnung OMJ's rom with SPB Shell also and like it much better than the Cube thing, is the cube thing just a today pludin? I'm new to the Touch so I don't know what the Touch Flo thing is, is it swiping your finger on the screen thing? I like in the Contacts page the right side listing and when you move your finger up and down it, it shows you the letter in the middle, not sure what that is called either.
