Verizon XV 6900 - Who's Flashed?

Looking for some final comments and results from Verizon users who have flashed.

Which final ROM are you using? Problems encountered? Rev A success? GPS success? Major items to avoid?

Re: Verizon XV 6900 - Who's Flashed?

I have flashed mine using the PPC Kitchen. I have Rev A speeds and GPS. It has been working great with no major problems.

in for this as well.

I have updated mine using CoKe unlocker, updated to 6.1, but I cannot get any of the GPS builds that come with PPCKitchen updater to work, only the base 6.1 buiild. On top of that, even with that build installed, the POWER button on top of the phone doesnt work to turn the phone back on.

Anyhow, in for a step by step how to.

yeah i just saw that but with verizon they bs a lot about anything some where even saying that they would never release a official gps enabler because of the fact they can charge you to use vz navigator when it comes out for wm.

ROKWELL 05-29-2008 01:36 AM

Re: Verizon XV 6900 - Who's Flashed?

just unlock with cokemans unlocker 2.31, flash alltel's rom (dont let customization run) then flash to whatever rom you want!! thats the gist! but read the tutorials though!!!!

once you flash a verizon touch, it is very hard (if not impossible) to go back to stock! so flash knowing that!

and never try to downgrade your radio! my advice!
read, read, read everything! if your not sure ask! people are extremely cool here!

ive had moderate success with gps/rev.a, but it is also due to lack of time i have. i also had to call verizon to authenticate but its no big deal. just tell them your phone told you to call them!

dont hold your breadth waiting for verizon to release a gps/rev.a update either!
good luck!

Re: Verizon XV 6900 - Who's Flashed?

OK, I'll add my experience to this thread.

I've had my xv6900 since about 3 days after it became available. I waited until all of the patching and testing was completed on the Alltel ROM to do anything.

I started out by upgrading the radio to 3.37 which came with the Alltel ROM. I think used one of the existing ROMs out there, I believe it was OMJ. Anyway, once PPCKitchen updated to include the Vogue, I've been flashing my own ROMs based on that. I followed the instructions on this thread to upgrade the radio and ROM the first time: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...ighlight=safer

Now, a couple of observations. First, Verizon has NOT turned on EVDO. Rev A everywhere. By upgrading you may or may not get it depending on where you are. As for GPS, mine works fine as long as I prime it first using something like GPS Viewer. The only real issue I had with GPS was that, at first, I forgot to change the location service from 911 Only to location on under the phone settings.

As for the phone reauthorization thing. This happened to me right after I unlocked and upgraded the first time. I'm not sure whether it was the unlocking that caused it or the upgrading of the radio. All I know is that a simple call to #8899 from the phone and a few minutes is all it took to get corrected. I've flashed probably about 10 times since then getting my phone the way I want it and I've never had this issue again.

Feel free to ask anyting you want and I'll answer if I can.

Re: Verizon XV 6900 - Who's Flashed?

I flashed last weekend with success. I have been using the GPS all week without any issue. Sometimes it takes longer then others to lock which having used other BT GPS receivers is just the way it works. In regards to Rev A speeds, my speeds have varied dramatically. When its fast its fast and when its slow it sucks. This can also be a function of the phone processor as well. I am about 25 miles west of Boston. I had to call to have the phone authenticated once and it really wasn't a big deal. The bottom line is I bought the phone from them, pay for their service and can install third party software and modify the phone. They are there to help and I don't think they care if you make modifications. I just told them it crashed and when I did a hard reboot I couldn't make a call.

This was the process I followed as I described in a post under OMJ's ROM which I used:

Re: OMJ's WM6.1 Custom Touch ROM w/ UC, GPS, REV A! Updated 5/16/08
I am certainly no expert but had success following the directions on the first page of this thread as well as the two stickys:

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=25335

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=17473

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=24979

That being said, here is what I did:

First step is to tun the unlocker to unlock the phone allowing it to be flashed.

-unlock w/ ImCokeMan's v2.31 unlocker

I then ran the original sprint leaked ROM which also upgrades the radio to the necessary 3.37.15. After running the .exe when the ROM is flashed it will ask you to align the screen and enter the date and time. After which it will count down from 3 to begin provider customization. Perform a soft reboot before this customization begins to prevent the Sprint customization from running.

ftp://up.ppcgeeks.com/Vogue/Users/OM..._0823_Test.exe

I finally ran OMJ's custom rom for Verizon.

ftp://up.ppcgeeks.com/Vogue/Users/OM...om.Verizon.exe

The only other comments that I have is that after running it took a while for the first GPS lock with GPS viewer. After that, lock was fast. Also, I had to call VZ customer service to authenticate my phone. No big deal.

I haven't tried any of the other ROM's but I know some Verizon users have had success with some of the others. They vary by what programs they have pre-installed, the UI setup, etc.

I take no credit for any of this, it is only through the hard work of other's like OMJ, Dr. Harvey, http://67.228.199.237/forum.ppcgeeks...g/rating_5.gif jim2561, and many others that I had any clue or confidence to proceed.

now i use the ppc kitchen and i have not had to reauthenticate my phone yet...and ive flashed about 5 times..

I, too, had to call VZW to get my phone reauthenticated after unlocking and flashing a new rom the first time. I just played stupid, said I didn't know what happened but now I can't call. No hassles; first they had me do the *228; when that didn't work, they eventually figured out that it was necessary to actually generate an authentication number (a long one) and I had to physically type it in after dialing #776 (I think that's the number). Anyway, since then I've flashed a number of times using the PPCGeeks Kitchen without any further authentication problems.

Never be afraid to sound like an idiot it frequently can work in your favor. Just say you don't know why it did it. After a reboot this happened. All true. They will just have to tweak some settings on their end. Perhaps just reset whatever it is they reset.

Oddly enough, if you call #8899 from the phone, they can fix the authentication problem right then and you shouldn't have to type anything in manually.

But as far as what I told them, i simply told them it stopped working... but I was ready to play stupid and tell them I was playing around with the phone and I wasn't sure what I did wrong. :evil4:

I'm using the PPCKitchen and my GPS works. Have you checked to make sure all of your External GPS settings are right and your location service is set to location on instead of 911 only?

works with sprint. How do I get the GPS activated? I was able to make phone calls wiithout calling verizon. Does this happen when you install the verizon ROM?

Re: Verizon XV 6900 - Who's Flashed?

I did mine successfully. I used OMJ's custom verixon rom after flashing the stock Sprint radio. It was not hard to do and the performance is worth it. WM6.1 has threaded texts, a big plus. Read through this thread. It gives you a very straightforward method and it does work.

I'm not exactly sure what's in the gps kickstart cab, but it has definitely helped with locking using the no2chem os build in the vogue kitchen. I'm having problems getting locks, though, using the new build in the kitchen.

Maybe this weekend I'll tackle my first flash. Maybe. I'm pretty happy with the way my XV6900 is working now but the lure of GPS is pretty tempting and I'd love to get some of the other features working... like bluetooth tethering, streaming video, and bluetooth sync. I'm not sure if flashing will unlock these features but they damn sure don't work now.

Agreed! Too much Sprint..lol
I am using OMJ's 3.03 custom ROM after flashing the new 3.03 sprint radio. It as been all systems go form the get go. Speed is great, internet speed is nice and GPS locks quickly, lsss than 10 secs usually.
The best advice i can give is this; If yhou have a phone that works other than your XV, keep it around. When you Are ready to flash, go on VZW and activate the old phone FIRST. Do this with the battery removed from the XV. THEN flash and do whatever mods. Then go back to VZW site and activate the XV with the old phone's battery removed. This works every time and no calls to VZW with lame excuses :drunken:

If your talking about OMJ 3.02 verizon rom, its still available, but with the 3.03 radio out, you need a 3.03 ROM which OMJ did, but its generic.
If your talking about something else....nevermind:headbang:

Agreed :) I flashed to DHarvey's Black Vista (really slick) and used LiveSearch to travel from West TN to Gulf Shores, AL last week. Even in the areas where there was no data connection (down in MS), I could still see the GPS path and the directions were dead on!

Live Search doesn't talk to you like some of the costly GPS packages out there, but it does beep at you when you near a turn and then beep again (different sound) at the turn itself.

DHarvey's ROM can be found at http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=31081. The link to the Verizon-specific ROM is at the bottom of the first post.

I'd be happy to help anyone on specifics - MMS or GPS priming. Goodness knows I've received plenty of help myself here!
