Anyone using iGO 8
So I've tried Tomtom, Garmin and now I'm trying iGO 8.
Tomtom works quite well and I haven't found much problem with it. It's nice and simple and easy to use. Garmin looks nicer than Tomtom, but I find getting satellite locks take longer than with Tomtom. There are bugs like it changing the time/date when you use it which I don't particularly like. I don't use it much for this reason. I'm trying iGO 8 pretty nice. It takes a bit longer to load, and connecting the gps takes a funky method to do but works, and when gps is connected, and it's searching for satellites, it seems to get more locks than both Tomtom and Garmin for some strange reason. The maps seems to be off a litter, either that or the accuracy isnt that good but it's probably not that far off from Tomtom and Garmin. Only bug so far I found is that using it changes the timezone but there seems to be a temporary fix by the developers until they get an update out. I havent tried the fix because I've just noticed something else which will lead me to go back to Tomtom. Seeing if those of you who've tried this program have problems receiving incoming calls as well. I had this problem with ghetto's rom, where I couldnt get incoming calls when I have gps activated using any gps software. I thought it may be the same problem here as well, so I checked tomtom and garmin and both can receive incoming calls while I'm using them and locked to satellites. Igo doesn't seem to allow incoming calls, it doesnt notify you of miss calls or even voicemails. I've tested it out. I'd like to see if others who've used iGO 8 have also experienced this. I'm trying to rule out the rom like before. Thanks. |
Re: Anyone using iGO 8
I've been playing with iGo8 recently. It's pretty nice, but it sucks up every last bit of RAM on my Mogul :( It does not interfere with incoming calls for me though. Right now I'm trying out the latest leaked Sprint ROM for the Mogul (3.49/3.39)

Re: Anyone using iGO 8
I've been using igo8 since the demo, which crashed all the times. But recently just got a hold of the final version and map file, dem file and building files. Everything seems great so far, loads time is a little slower than TomTom i guess due to all the graphical handling and such. I used GPSViewer to lock GPS first then launch Igo8 and it picked up the sats right away of course.
I actually used it yesterday going into San Francisco, and my brother called me up while I was navigating without any problems at all. I picked up the call, and talked for a little bit and hung up and iGo8 picked it up right away. The map display is right on the dot, no off set or anything for me, and it runs pretty smooth on my TOUCH too. Note, I cooked my own ROM without the Cube (BioTouch) stuff so it saves me another 4MB worth of RAM. So u might wanna disable biotouch cuz without it my device seems much faster. |
Re: Anyone using iGO 8
I was using iGo 8 and it worked pretty well. Ultimately I needed a program that announced the street names (I'm really not good at the the "turn left in 3.25 miles. Failed it in school). I switched and started using Mapnopolis. Its announces the street names and quickly relocates the route if you make a wrong turn.
However, I forgot to load the maps for Rhode island when I was up there a couple weeks ago. So I had to use TeleNav, which worked extremely well and kept a really good signal the whole time. |
Re: Anyone using iGO 8
you guys know there are TTS voices (announcing streets) files for igo8. if its ok to post i can post the US TTS voice. i dont think its warez since someone made it (not available through igo so it wasnt cracked or anything like that from an OEM copy) but ill wait for an answer if its ok to post.

Re: Anyone using iGO 8
So I reflashed several times and it has now been able to receive incoming calls. I don't know what caused it to not receive calls. I was thinking may be that TMC thing or something.
I found that the us tts voice that I have doesn't announce all street/road names. I heard it working for some streets but others it didnt even say anything other than "turn left/right in xxx meters" etc. The fix for the timezone changing seems to be working so I don't have the problem of it changing my timezones. I would like to use it to find my contacts like how garmin does, but I don't think there's a function for that. I don't need gpsviewer or anything to "prime" the gps but just use iGO "as is". But iGO doesn't detect the gps automatically, I have to go to gps and search and then go to TMC and search and then go back to gps and search, then it finds it. I don't know why but it works. After that, iGO connects to the gps and just has to find satellites. Those of you who also use iGO, do you have to do something similar for iGO to detect your gps? I'm not talking about finding and locking to satellites, just detecting that your device has gps receiver. I'm in Vancouver, BC, and to me, the maps seemed off a little. It puts me off a few houses down my block. Today I was driving and it said I already reached my destination but I was still in a major intersection. I didnt know where the place was as I was solely relying on gps. Good thing I had the address. I found that i was off by half a block. It didnt even tell me to turn on the street that the building was on...weird. I guess the maps for Canada arent as accurate or updated as the others. Any one got the 3D buildings and terrain to work? I have the files but I don't see buildings or terrain. I know some people in the US don't see buildings and terrain but there have been some that have. I guess it's not really important but it'd be something different. BTW, anyone know how to make the voices louder? I already have my phone speaker volume to max and iGO to max as well but since my car is a little loud I want it to say where to go slightly louder. Also, any of you know if you can use A2DP while using gps programs and I would I go about doing that. Thanks |
Re: Anyone using iGO 8
Garmin 4.20.20 doesn't seem to have the time/date reset issue, I've only noticed it in newer versions.
Can you load custom POI's in iGO 8? I really like that feature in Garmin. I had iGuidance v4 and I liked the street names being announced, but I think I can live without that. I'm sure Garmin will enable that feature sometime. |

I'm using 4.20.20 now but still have that time/date reset issue when it's on gps intermediate driver, but when I put it to com4 com4, it's ok. If garmin has tts, then that would be sweet. I like how garmin also tells you which side of the street your destination is when you arrive. I didn't expect that. |
Re: Anyone using iGO 8
Yeah, I just set it to the intermediate driver and 4.20.20 reset the date/time. Once it gets a lock though it looks like it updates itself.

Re: Anyone using iGO 8
i take it there are US maps for iGo 8 then?

Re: Anyone using iGO 8
argh...ok, so I've done further testing. On some occasions, few really (when I call myself, since I know I'm calling), I would get the incoming calls when I'm locked onto satellites with igo.
some other times, when I'm locked onto satellites, i can't get any calls. There was a couple of times it would vibrate once and then nothing. On the caller side, I would either go straight to voicemail or have the set number of rings then go to voicemail. I don't really know what is causing it to interfere with the radio for incoming calls but it does. Now I'm wondering if that's the same with Tomtom and Garmin, may be it works sometimes and other times it doesn't. Anyone notice this. I seem to be calling my own cell phone a lot to test it out. Most of the time I wouldnt even know since I'm not the one calling. What makes it worse is that I don't get any miss call notifications or voicemail notifications (not like the people calling me ever leave messages)... guess it's back to using something thing else. |
Re: Anyone using iGO 8
IGo8 is sweet, yes for custom POIs, TTS, and very accurate, speed matched speed in car etc... and can load just the states you need. Routes pretty good so far.
I dont see what some of the other posters were saying about the Vogue GPS being "in accurate, or a novalty, toy etc..." compared to a external gps adapter. So far with igo8, or google maps, its right on par with my true location, and accurate up to speed. I'm also comparing this to a in car GPS, (Escalade), they both choose totally diff routes at times. The TTS is not the best however (clarity wise). The Escalade GPS has street announcements beat in this department. Edit: I'll test the incoming calls tomorrow. Did not get any calls today. |
Re: Anyone using iGO 8
Couldn't get the .dem file to work thus far but for me the building file works in downtown area when you pass by landmarks buildings for example.
BTW, what configuration do you use for the TMC? "1headhunter1" suggested to add the following to the sys.txt file : [tmc] port="COM,x" // <- x = port used by TMC (1,2,3,...) source="yyy" // <- yyy = TMC protocol gps_source=0 |
Re: Anyone using iGO 8
Need some help here. Although I said I would use Tomtom/Garmin instead, I'd still like to try iGO.
So this is the problem: When I start iGO, and the GPS receiver, isn't connected, I can receive calls. When I connect GPS receiver, having locked onto satellites or may be not even, I can no longer receive incoming calls. Even when I exit iGO, I still cannot receive calls. I either have to reset my phone or I put it in airplane mode and then back to phone mode again. I think someone the program interferes with the radio or something. This is a similar problem I had when I was with ghetto's rom where I could not get incoming calls while I had gps running, using tomtom, garmin, gps viewer or any programs that uses gps. The only thing different this time is that Tomtom, Garmin don't have the problem anymore. I can receive calls while I'm using them and locked onto satellites. It's only iGO that doesn't work. Does anyone know if iGO interferes with the radio? The way I prime the gps is I search of the receiver, then I search for TMC and then go back to searching for the gps. I'm thinking maybe when I search for TMC it inactivates the radio or may be it forces it to stay on evdo or whatever and not allow it to go back to 1xRTT, which from what I read elsewhere is needed to receive calls/data. Anyone have any ideas? I'm with Bell Mobility, in Vancouver, BC. Using a clean rom that I cooked up with the kitchen. I also did that ##778# hack from this site http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=360288 to make it so that I poll the station more frequently. That didnt help at all, still didnt get any incoming calls. |
Re: Anyone using iGO 8

Re: Anyone using iGO 8
"In the United States of America, XM Satellite Radio started transmitting TMC messages all over the US already whereas Sirius Satellite Radio announced it. Also Clear Channel and Tele Atlas have a TMC service, using FM-RDS in 77 US cities and three Canadian metropolitan areas."
Id assume thats because we have no way on our phones to receive TMC transmissions anyways- its transmitted over radio waves (FM). Its one thing on an in-car system built into the radio, but our phones dont have the receiver to get TMC signals as i understand it. |
Re: Anyone using iGO 8
I had it installed for a few days but every time I ran the program it would reset my clock. Also, I always use Google Maps to prime and after a reboot it always connects in < min. However, after installing iGO8 it would take several minutes or never connect to a satellite at all. Then, while using iGO8 it would drop satellites and says "gps lost" and normally it would reconnect in a couple secs but not always.
The program is really nice but after dropping satellites (tomtom *never* had) and the extra time to find a signal to begin with plus resetting my clock... I had to restore a backup before the installation. Everything seems back to normal now for me. Thats too bad because it seemed much nicer than tomtom. |
Re: Anyone using iGO 8
Here's a Solution for you guys using iGO8 !! AND NO it doesn't need GPS Gate
and PLEASE READ the readMe file, it just doesn't get any easier than this. Credit to AstronusX for making AstroLauncher http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364199 The launcher is basically a 2 in 1 shortcut, it launch Both the AstroLauncher AND the iGO8 at the same time. http://www.dbhqs.com/dumb4ever <-- iGO8AstraLauncher.zip |

Try the link that dumb4ever has in his post, it's much better than the way I was doing it as it seemed to solve my incoming call problems. This will prime your gps and also allow you to lock on satellites faster. I use it with tomtom and now with garmin. |
Re: Anyone using iGO 8
I was just made aware of this in the other GPS thread. Uncheck auto timezone stuff and your timezone won't reset. I didn't' have to mess with the sys file.

Re: Anyone using iGO 8
how are yall getting this to work? it's appearing to me to be like a big puzzle, and when u think u've found the next piece.....oops, not there anymore. any help would be appreciated.

I thought I replied to some of your posts in other threads regarding this problem and I thought you figured it out that it was Ghetto's ROM. Anyway, I'm using Garmin V4.20.20 set to COM4. I'm pretty much happy with it except the intermediate driver time reset problem. |

Re: Anyone using iGO 8
Thanks mardukeme, but one thing that i think is missing from iGO8 is the fuel price update, Garmin have those but i haven't seen it on iGO8 !!
or maybe someone knows something i dont ?? Thanks, any info greatly appreciated. |
Re: Anyone using iGO 8
i forgot garmin had that...garmin's a solid prog too, but nothing's touching this Igo8 yet. i never really checked with the accuracy of garmin's gas prices....is it pretty accurate?
|
Re: Anyone using iGO 8
they usually pretty recent, the longest without update i think 4 days when i use it.

Re: Anyone using iGO 8
Has anyone got the 3d terrain working using the dem file for USA, or get the contacts loaded as well?
Edited Never mind I figured it out. |
Re: Anyone using iGO 8
can you share how you got it working? still trying to get both to work.

For the Garmin problem, if you set it to com4, it wont reset ur time anymore. I no longer have that problem, but did before. For iGO, the recommended fix by the developers is to change the sys.txt. I think unchecking those 2 options doesnt work for everyone which is why the sys.txt fix is needed. |

You have to prime the GPS with a program. Search for "GPS prime" for some suggestions. I use GPSviewer. Thats a benefit of garmin, no need for a primer app. Going to try astrolauncher in a few. No TMC support on the Mogul or the Touch. (It broadcasts over FM so you need a FM transmitter, like in the ETEN M700 ppc, the Titan's competitor) |

Re: Anyone using iGO 8
honestly, i think theyve added waay to many features in igo8.
its pretty slow and "dumb" on the vogue, so im sticking with igo 2006 for now, until things get "snappier" i like the idea of 3d terrain and buildings but its really a hassle trying to move around the application and zoom around, move around, etc etc on top of that igo8 cant initialize the builtin gps, i have to fire up google maps for it to work. |
