Using Blackberry USB Charger for HTC Touch?

Knowing the Blackberry 8703 (my old device) and the HTC Touch both use USB chragers, is it reasonable to assume I can use my extra BB chargers to charge my HTC Touch? I checked the output specs on both chargers. The HTC Touch factory USB AC charger puts out 5V, same as the Blackberry USB charger. The only difference is the amperage is slightly different. The BB unit puts out .75A vs the 1A the HTC charger puts out.

Anyone see any issues? To me, it appears the Blackberry charger is slightly less powerful. So naturally I'm thinking if it's less powerful, there's no harm in any damage, right? I'm thinking - they both have to conform to the USB power standards when connected to a PC, so the only difference with the AC charger connection is the AC charger will be a little more powerful to charge the device faster.

Has anyone used a non-HTC branded charger like maybe from another device like I'm talking about?

Re: Using Blackberry USB Charger for HTC Touch?

Continuing this thought process... Does anyone know if all USB chargers are compatable with all USB devices? I have a habit of using whichever power cable is handy to charge whichever device needs charging. Is this bad?

Re: Using Blackberry USB Charger for HTC Touch?

I strongly disagree with a blanket statement like that. ALWAYS make sure the voltage output by the charger is the same (within half a volt, tops) as that required by the device or one, the other or both WILL fry. For the most part, you can use a charger with a somewhat lower current rating than the device with the only downside being that the device will take longer to charge. But it should be fairly close, such as .75A vs 1A above. If the charger only put out .25A and the device required 1A, it would probably damage the charger which, in turn, could damage the device if, say, the excessive current pull caused a regulator to short. Just because they both have a USB interface doesn't mean they're at all compatible in any other way.

i agree with markgamber, in tuff spots i guess anything will work but try and use same brand chargers or aftermarket meant for that unit

Re: Using Blackberry USB Charger for HTC Touch?

Thanks for the advise. I guess I just made a bad assumption. Fortunately, there hasn't been any damage yet, but I will be spending my evening trying to match up chargers with devices.

Re: Using Blackberry USB Charger for HTC Touch?

Thanks. Ihad assumed if the output was pretty close it would be ok. I wouldn't use it if the voltage were different though. I'd only feel ok about using it if the amperage were different, but only slightly. Any big differences between the amp rating and I wouldn't even atempt it just to be safe. Ultimately, the company I work for will buy me a second charger if I need one. I just thought it would be convenient to use the old BB charger if it was ok.

Re: Using Blackberry USB Charger for HTC Touch?

Generally they all work with one exception. Moto chargers will charge non moto phones but moto phones will only charge on moto chargers.

All cell chargers charge at roughly the same voltage so you are generally safe to try it out. I have never seen one blow out from using the wrong charger.
