Cube Pics

I'm using the original cube here and trying to add some pictures to my speed dial. The pictures I'm trying to use where taking using my digital camera and uploaded to my pc, then transfered to my SD card. The format I have them in when I transfer is .jpg and I have them cropped and sized down pretty small, yet on the cube they show up very unclear. What format and size (or process) are you guys using to add pics to your cube w/o the distortion? Thanks.
