ringtone location confusion

Ok i found some stock nextel ringtones(mp3format) that i wanted and placed them into to storage - my ringtones folder amd noticed that they show up as music files under audio manager. im gonna try a different format later to see if that helps...(edit wma files wont show up in audio manger library)

anyhow, to simplify things i cut and pasted the ringtones into windows - rings folder so my small problem was solved.....

But i noticed that there were more ringtones that i can choose from on my phone than in the rings file. For example, I noticed that ring standard wasnt in there. so i looked in just the windows folder and found it...Then i discovered there were more ringtones that do not show up as choices on the phone
ie ring standard 2. what gives?(EDIT ring standard 2 and some others r hidden why)

if i remember correctly the ringtones were put in my ringtones

and message alerts in the windows file.
SO WHATS THE RINGS FOLDER FOR THEN?

actually if you leave your ringtones on your storage card (not in a folder) they will show up on the list. Also you can do the same thing with .tsk pictures (themes).
