I just used getdataback, it is for any windows file system. I did nothing special.
It is fairly expensive. It found all my stuff but I wanted to know was what was on it so I could scrouge around and rebuild it from scratch. I didn't want to recover using getdataback but it looked like it would work (I just used it to browse).

You can see that the Root FAT index table is corrupt (no files are lost).

I tried doing chkdsk repair on it for grins before I formatted and it failed.

There is another program floating around that is free (called FreeUpdate) or something like that.

I don't use s2u2 and have had the problem twice.

You could copy your good folders back to the device, and use PocketMechanic or SKTools to format the card, and copy your good folders back.

After a week of ownership, I experienced my first data corruption on the standard 512 card. However, the only main problem was the 100MEDIA folder in DCIM was gone (along with all my photos). I believe I had the camera album open when the device went to sleep. I

Now, every week random programs stored on my card won't run and File explorer shows the files aren't on the card anymore. After a soft reset, they're always back.

So I wiped everything clean and stated fresh, with only the problem applications i suspected writing to the card. These are the camera album and outlook. Although i only reproduced it twice, I did identify a cause. When I have an outlook email attachment open and the phone goes to sleep/wakes up and i close the file, it appears that i loose everythign on my card. However, if I take the card out and replace, it becomes "Storage Card 2." Opening this folder shows only Outlook email attachments. I can also open the "Storage Card" folder which shows the original files. I then just rename the folders and delete "Storage Card 2"

So i've slowly added more programs to the storage card and cannot identify any of them causing the problem. These include HTC audio manager, HTC home customizer, pocket mechanic, IM, google maps, yahoo go 2, TCPMP, and spb backup.

Oddly, the only problem has been that I cannot run the programs from the start menu since the shortcuts in the start menu folder don't work randomly. The shortcut and program files are still there and named correctly, but the shortcut just don't do anything. After a soft reset they're sometimes back, but i usually need to make a new shortcut and replace the existing one... works fine then.
I do have all my themes and ringones on the root folder, btw. No problems with those.

I also miss about 3 calls a week and miss a bunch of emails from the stupid thing locking up and not coming out of sleep. I always close all applicarions except ActiveSync. I installed s2u2 tonight to see what happens.

This is very frustrating. Fortunately i always keep everything important syncd with the exchange server at work.

Happened to me for the first time today. Several folders, including Program Files, were crapped up and unreadable/unusable. THANK GOD this stuff was already backed up via Sunnysoft BackupManager on the card. I just did a restore and everything is back to normal. However, I am unable to get rid of the crapped folders/files. So I have saved everything onto a folder on my hard drive and re-format the card. Perhaps this time format it the RIGHT way, as most manufacturers just crank these things out with a basic FAT format (as opposed to FAT 32, 64kb).

I had my touch for 3 weeks and had no problems with my memory card, but all I had on it were some pictures. I then got a 4 gb and loaded it with music and it was fine for 2 days, then on the 3rd day I was in the gym trying it listen to music and the card was only showing a dcim folder nothing else, even though it showed that over 3 gb was in use. I tried a soft reset with no luck, so when I got home I tried getdataback and I was able to recover all the files, but I ended up just formatting that card and refilling the card with the same files that I already had on my pc before I recovered them using getdataback. Now to see how long it lasts before it happens again.

I read your post about 2 days too late. I had no problems with my 2gb card for about 1 month, then one day my entire cabs folder was gone [430mb worth of cabs]. I popped the card out into my card reader and used winxp and ran chkdsk and it created a new directory "found.000" with over 4000 "FILExxxx.chk" files. I tried using some utilities i found online to recover and restore them but could not piece together all the individual files in the cabs back together. I ultimately reformatted the card and replaced it with copies of the cabs.

I do not and have never ran S2U2. I think my problem occurred when spb backup was trying to create a scheduled backup overnight. I have it to write to a "\storagecard\backup" folder that already contained several existing backup files. When i noticed that the cabs directory was missing, i also checked in the backup dir and all my prior backups were gone, except for the latest one. ???

This has got to be a firmware / OS Software issue with the HTC Touch and WM6... I wonder if the upcoming (rumored) rom from sprint will have any effect on it.

i would tend to agree - there are too many posts here where people say "I don't have a problem" and then one day "holy crap! every thing's gone on my storage card!"

One thing I think people could try and report the results of is formatting their cards to FAT32 if they are not already in that format... most memory makers take the cheap route and do FAT16...

This way we could rule out some kind of possible bug with WM6 or the Touch and FAT16 filesystems. (Although Id probably have to side with some of the other people who think its just an issue with Read+Write operations when the device enters a low power state, Which would be a firmware issue)

I have had my touch since the first week of december. I was using the stock memory card for the first couple weeks, and i did not have any problems.

I turned on an option to store email attachments to my memory card. After that a day or two later my card was unreadable in my touch and my laptop. I noticed it one morning i went to play music, and it said i did not have a card inserted. I had to go to a friends laptop to format it again.

I have been using a 2 gig sandisk for almost 2 months now with no issues at all. I also have never checked that option again in outlook. This card i have had for about a year and was used previously in my razr.

I have pictures and music on my card i access daily.

i have a problem with my memory card, very weird i been reading the posts and soo far no one has this problem yet, i use my touch as my mp3 player at the gym and i have all my music on my card and i play it off the windows media player and one day i went to the gym and i went to my playlists and all my music is gone, music that i bought from sprint music store is gone and my pictures are gone, went to the repair sprint store today and they told me they fixed it and i go home and they didnt do jack shit, and whats weird is my storage card is the exact same as if i still had all my songs on there soo i called sprint today and now they are sending me a new phone!!!!!!

I use my card several times daily. I have had no issues. i store everything music to spreadsheets.

I was going to say my problems were resolved when I made sure the card was seated correctly. Unfortunately, I noticed skipping with my music today, even though airplane mode was on (grr at having to even do that). I figured such is life and went to my storage card to read some pdf files and lo and behold, whacky characters for the folder and file names again. I backed out of the storage card (resco explorer), soft reset and it's been fine for several hours now.

This is with the card supplied by sprint. Is it possible the quality of those cards is inconsistent and that people not having problems are because they have purchased other cards?

never had an issue yet.. got my touch the 18th of DEC... backups are written daily to the card (PIM backup)... i have pictures on it and backup CAB files.. all is well

I have an 8GB Sandisk $60 on ebay in my touch and just put it in right out of the package, no formatting and it has worked flawlessly. Programs, video playback, ect.

I have not had any issues with the 512 included, a 1gb Kingston made in Japan and a 2gb Kingston made in Taiwan.

I tried a sandisk 8gb, it lasted maybe 30mins, copied some files off the 2gb to the phone and to the 8gb. that worked fine, then I wanted to use the card reader and stuck it in the PC to copy more stuff. At 1gb of files it failed. Then the PC couldn't see the card after retries. Installed it back into my phone and it couldn't see it either.

Ran wm5storage on the touch plugged it into the PC and used disk management to format it. It completed fine, but the Touch nor the PC could read or write to the SD.

After that removing, reinstalling on the PC and the Touch, neither could see it. Wm5storage would not initialize.. Returned to vendor for replacement.

The 512, 1gb and 2gb still working fine in the Touch without corruption..

Using a 8gb Sandisk here myself without any issues. For large files, I don't use the activesync but copy the files directly from PC to the microSD. Of course, I do follow the procedure of turning off my Touch before removing/inserting the card as well as using the XP utility for disconnecting USB devices.

I had my 1GB (Bell Stock) work just fine for 3 months (HTC Touch Vogue) and then I put in a 4Gb card and it lasted ala a week. Fried it dead. Not even my PC will recognize it - Mt 1GB Still works... Just within the 7 days return policy at Memory express... Even Tech tested it - it's fried. :(

I have a class 2 kingston 2GB, I believe class 2 is the recommended ? Only had the phone and card a month but it works great .no issues. I have not removed the card since first install and I will try not to.

I have a full backup scheduled nightly and have put many files and settings on it.

I did format in a card reader prior to install .

thinking of upgrading to sandisk 8GB class 2.

ever since i switched to 6.1 ..i haven't had any card issues. with the stock 6.0 i had my card corrupt every 2 weeks.

Sorry to jump in on this,but my 512mb card that came with mine just went crazy about a week ago. Everything vanished with just that with the "box" character that cannot be read. Its eating up like 200mb of space, but I cannot read it or even delete it.

Any idea on how to recover or delete it?

Also, where are you gusy getting WM 6.1? Is it an update from HTC or sprint?

i've got a A-data 4gb. The only problem I've had is with windows media player saying it was corrupt and wouldn't update the library(tried deleting library file didn't work). But pocket player finds them all fine so it doesn't really bother me.

Also recently with Media player syncing on my computer the syncing stopped half way saying an error occurred then when I put the rest of the songs on they didn' transfer all the song info on to the card.

not sure if that is because the card is corrupt or if it's media players fault

My card has gone corrupt maybe 4 times since I had the phone. I noticed once that after I dropped it the card showed corrupt. I'm not sure if this is the exact cause but I wish I can get it to stop happening. Having to backup everything defeats the point of having a memory card in the phone.

you can get 6.1 on the upgrade forum on the touch. also if the soft reset didnt recover the card..than you have to reformat it.

Same thing happened to me. I was going to reformat my card but though I would just reinstall my programs but it still seems like its taking up space even though I can't see the files. Also the update people are getting is a beta version floating around the official one won't be out till about june and it will be officially from htc.
