Regular USB connector works on Touch

It just puzzled me why HTC uses a modified USB connection? It was one I had never seen before and I thought that I was forced to only use the adapter they supplied. Well I accidentally plugged in the USB charger end to the Touch and it started charging.

So I guess we can use any usb device on the touch.

Huh?!? What are you talking about - "modified USB"?

I've used several regular USB cables and chargers with my Touch - same ones I used with the 6700, Mogul, USB drives, GPS receivers, BT headsets, etc, etc.

The Touch uses a standard USB port. It IS upside down from most, but no big deal.

No, actually the port is a different shape than the standard mini usb ports. They are that shape to support the adapters and the headphones that HTC supplies with the phone. I believe the internal pins are as usual on a mini usb for charging and the outside are used as extra connections for things like the headset compatibility.

Take a look closely at the usb port on the Touch. It is not the shape of standard usb connections. It's the shape of a rectangle with one corner slanted inward. Look and you will see what I'm talking about. Now I have never had an HTC phone/item before so I have never knew they used a usb connector that was not standard.

Geez, it is still a regular mini-usb port. No news here, move on.

OK - understood. It is, BTW, the same connector that the Mogul/Titan uses - just upside down. I noticed the shape difference, but since I never even took the adapters out of their plastic bags with my Mogul or Touch, never even though about it. Just used my regular cables from the get-go.

I bought a Razr2 recently, and have learned that micro-USB will replace mini-USB for future cellphones. So, all of my cables and chargers won't work on the Razr2. :=)
